The Minister for Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea has hinted that government is going to undertake a demolition exercise to reduce flooding in the country.
He said structures on waterways will be pulled down to save people from dying.
His comment comes on the back of over a dozen people who have died following a few hours of downpour on two different occasions.
Already, the country’s Meteorological Service Department has forecast heavy rains this year as the rainy season nears and the question of our readiness to face such situations comes to mind.
But in a one-on-one interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Thursday, Mr Atta Akyea indicated that apart from the demolition, government has apportioned about GHc200m to construct drains and expand old ones.
“There will be demolition of structures on waterways . . . we can’t say because of human face people should die."

there is no doubt that our kind of settlement is the reason for the numerous flooding every year. u may demolish them but believe me they will build again. I will advise we spend the money for the demolition and settlement to build a better drainage system. we can do this and not demolition anything. let us use our brain for once.
Look at this! They sit and watch the people build on water ways and later say they want to demolish them. You travel on Odorkor Kasoa road often and you see people building on the bank of river Danso. You wait for disaster to happen and use NADMO for rescue operations where some money of the tax payer is siphoned into party coffers. This kind of attitude is a common acknowledge to my grandmother at a village called 'Dzin Pa Yie Sen Ahonya', to wit 'good name is better than riches'.
Kuffour's Airport residence is on the water way, start from there. lol
The state institutions are not working. The State Housing Company is one ***barred word*** state institution. If you buy a Land form them it takes years for them to give you your documents. Nana has to visit these institutions one by one or talk to their clients to get more information on how these institutions work. The tims clocks and CCT camerals have all been disconnected in most of these state institutions. We can not wait for ages to get permits to build if those who are to ensure that structures are situated at the right places refuse to wòrk.Govt has to be step up his game other wise this institutions will bring it down.
