All is set for the construction work on the controversial National Cathedral to begin at the heart of Accra at Ridge.
Presenting the 2020 budget in Parliament on Wednesday, 13th November, 2019, Finance Minster, Ken Ofori-Atta said work on the project will commence next year.
“Mr. Speaker, the interdenominational National Cathedral that will be located in the heart of the capital, stands to help unify the Christian community as a place of worship and promote the national conversation on the role of faith in building Ghana. With the participation of various churches in the administration of the Cathedral, collective ownership of the project by the churches is envisioned.
“The Board of Trustees and the Secretariat have been established, and preparatory works for the construction of the Cathedral have begun. Procurement processes to select a contractor are expected to conclude by the end of the year and construction is expected to begin in March, 2020,” he told parliament.
The cathedral will boast of chapels and baptistery, a music school, an art gallery, and a Bible museum.
The National Cathedral of Ghana is a planned interdenominational Christian cathedral scheduled to be built as part of Ghana's 60th anniversary celebrations.
The design for the cathedral was unveiled by the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, in March 2018

FOR HEAVENS SAKE LET US HAVE A REFERENDUM ON THIS CATHEDRAL AND SEE IF THE PROPLE OF GHANA WILL AGREE TO THIS WASTE? EACH TIME I PASS BY THE AREA I WEEP INSIDE ME, DESTROYING ALL THE BUILDINGS OF THE JUDGES WHO STAY VERY CLOSE THE COURTS AND TURNING IT INTO A CHURCH, MEANWHILE THE RIDGE CHURCH IS JUST CLOSE BY. tHE INTERNATIONAL CONFRENCE CENTRE IS CLOSE BY. PRESIDENT AKUFFU ADDO HAS SAID HE MADE A PERSONAL PROMISE TO GOD TO BUILD HIM A CHURCH WHY DONT HE FIND ANOTHER LAND SOME WHERE OUT OF ACCRA AND DO THAT FROM HIS OWN FUNDS AND NOW ITS THE STATE THAT IS FUNDING IT? WHAT HAVE WE DONE WRONG AS A PEOPLE TO DESERVE THIS. I KNOW THIS PRESIDENT WILL NOT SAY TENTIE OBIA IN PUBLIC BUT IN HIS HEAD HE WILL SAY THAT AND ITS DENGEROUS. GO TO THE HOSPITALS COUNTRY WIDE AND YOU WILL SEE PROBLEMS WITH FUNDING YES WE HAVE BILLIONS TO BUILD A CATHEDRAL WHICH WE DONT NEED NOW AT THAT PRIME SITE.
Can anyone help me please, Is Ghana a Secular or a Christian state?
They kicked against the building of Jubilee House but they tried to claim it with a name change.Let the cathedral project come to fruition we shall see them running head over heels to own it.Visionless people!
These guys are indeed rascalss and deceptive. Were told it cost the taxpayer nothing. What about the apartments built five years ago that was demolished to build the cathedral
Did the Finance Minister mention any figure to be spent on the Cathedral by Government. A statement on the Cathedral made in the budget is necessary because any finance person knows that such a big project affect the state of the economy directly and indirectly.
IF THE CATHEDRAL IS NOT TO BE FINANCED BY THE GOVERNMENT THEN WHY SHOULD IT BE PART OF GOVERNMENT'S BUDGET STATEMENT........ANY EDUCATION PLEASE ?
no roads, hospitals, schools and jobs etc. NO building of National Cathedral
I thought Ghanaians were told the cathedral will not be built by the state so what changed. We all life to see.
