President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has asked Ghanaians not to pay attention to 'fraudulent' persons who claim they have a cure for coronavirus.
He said the focus should rather be on practicing personal hygiene.
"We have a responsibility to help ourselves and each other...recommendations are for each one of us to practice basic persona hygiene and be extra careful with sanitation. Ministry of Health has advised, we have to revisit our custom of shaking hands and stop doing so completely and we must cover our mouth when we cough and sneeze. We should pray that the Almighty continue to shield us...it's also the time to pay attention to the health experts and reject all fraudulent claims for cure that will only threaten public health and safety" he urged.
Announcing what government has done so far in terms of preparations, President Akufo-Addo who was speaking at Ghana's 63rd Independence celebration said 5000 protective equipment have been distributed to health facilities nationwide.
"In the early days of the outbreak, I constituted a high powered emergency response team to handle the crisis; they have been monitoring developments and reporting to me on a daily basis...5000 personal protective equipment for health workers have been procured and distributed to all regions and major health facilities, points of entry, teaching hospitals, treatment centers and selected health facilities...additional ones are being procured" he stated.
According to him, "in the interim, non-essential travel into Ghana is being strongly discouraged from high-risk countries namely: China, Iran, Italy, Japan and South Korea
The 63rd-anniversary celebration was on the theme: “Consolidating our Gains”.
In attendance as Special Guest were Dr. Keith Rowley, the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago and his wife, as well as his royal majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene and his wife.
The 42,000-capacity Baba Yara Sports Stadium was filled to capacity.

Maybe the president has forgotten that he is first a Ghanaian before an Akyem. We all travel with Ghanaian passport and not ethnic passport(- ewe passport, akan passport, frafra passport or dargati passport). Ghana at 63 must guide us to develop and not be primitive and ***barred word***. Citizens with evil intentions can spread the deadly virus and no ethnic group would be left out just like what others did with HIV. Very true that Ghana first before any ethnic group so please we should learn from mistakes/wrong doing
NPP is prioritizing election over the safety of Ghanaians. The independence day celebration should have been held in the Volta region to send a message that we are one people with a common destiny. The reason is that Volta region is gradually becoming volatile area with homeland group. Also there is no homeland group in Ashanti region. Rotation of independence is not a bad idea, however it should be strategized to ensure peaceful existence and national development. It is no secret that citizens from particular ethnic group had led all coup plots in the country. Also, Ghana is not beyond coup due to polarization ongoing in the country. I will suggest that the next independence day celebration/parade regardless of which party in government in Ghana should be held in the Oti region to encourage development and stop spreading of homeland agenda. Coronavirus is spreading fast, are we sure that this is not in Ghana. Or there has not been official report does not necessary translate that its not in Kumasi/Ghana. A WORD TO A WISE IS ENOUGH. GHANA FIRST BEFORE ANY ETHNIC GROUP
Ok. As a president, what is the credible information you are providing us on this conoravirus. Do you think it is a rhetoric that can fight this, may God forbid it becomes positive in Ghana? In other nations, the president himself gets involved in providing credible information to the citizens. You are standing there talking about people spreading fraudulent news. Update us on the credible news you have. You politicians are all liars. Atta Akyea was saying a video shot on garbage in drainage was fraudulent and joyfm news exposed him. This is what you people always say, but it turns out that you are the liars.
