The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has dispelled reports that locally brewed akpeteshie has 100 percent alcohol and can be used as a substitute for hand sanitizers.
After news of the coronavirus broke in Ghana, reports were rife that washing the hands with akpeteshie can kill the virus because it is 100 percent alcohol.
However, the Director-General of the GHS, Dr Patrick Aboagye says it’s a misconception.
According to him, “Akpeteshie is just 40 percent; with the best of distillation, you cannot get more than 79 percent; maximum 45 percent. So akpeteshie does not help. Everybody is at risk so we should all protect ourselves. Adhere to strict personal hygiene”.
He was speaking in a one-on-one interview on Peace FM's morning show ‘Kokrokoo’ with host Kwami Sefa Kayi.
