African countries have been told to prepare for the worst by the head of the World Health Organization (WHO).
In all, 16 deaths have been reported: Six in Egypt, six in Algeria, two in Morocco, one in Sudan and one in Burkina Faso.
Africa has been the least affected continent, but health experts warn that strained public health systems could become quickly overwhelmed.
The head of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, is quoted by AFP news agency saying, "Africa should wake up... in other countries, we have seen how the virus actually accelerates after a certain tipping point."
Burkina Faso announced the first death in sub-Saharan Africa on Wednesday - a 62-year-old diabetic woman. The authorities say the patient was Rose Marie Compaoré, a vice-president in the national assembly.
In South Africa, recorded cases rose sharply to 116 cases on Wednesday, most of them involving people who had been in Europe. The number includes 14 local transmissions.

That man who heads W.H.O is a joke...covid-19 spreads only in snow falling countries. They want to give corrupt African leaders more excuses to rub their people...Like Nana Addo is doing here. If they really care, why haven't they tackled our ***barred word*** poverty?
WHO is satanic... Why are they putting fear in us.. Almighty God will protect us from any evil plots against us.. Africans
HIV was found first in Los Angees in the USA . within a couple of years it has become an african disease and so are many other. it is my hope this virus does not survive hear though some may get infected . otherwise you bet it will be called an African disease very soon
WHO, why, do you have a problem with the least figures in Africa? We pray and reject escalating figures in Jesus' name. Not by our might, nor by power, but by the Spirit of God. This too shall pass.
W.H.O is a joke, what is thier work, are they there to put fear and panic to its member states? Already they came out and including many health expert's wondering why the virus ain't hitting Africa hard. Afterall if they have seen the future why don't they come for our aid than making unecessary speeches .
