Seasoned Journalist, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has empathized with teachers on strike for an increase in their Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).
Four teacher unions commenced a strike action on Monday, July 4 and presently remain on strike demanding a 20 percent increase in their allowances to better their living conditions.
Meanwhile, the government is said to hold talks with them today to reach an amicable end.
Speaking to host Nana Yaw Kesseh on Peace FM's morning programme "Kokrokoo", Mr. Pratt bemoaned the treatment meted out to the teachers as he expressed disgust over how much they earn for their services.
Narrating a story about a friend of his who is a University lecturer, Mr. Pratt called on the Akufo-Addo government to streamline the incentive structure for public sector workers with particular emphasis on teachers.
"A friend of mine who lectures at the University showed me his pay slip and I shockingly asked is this the reason why he went to school to do a first degree and did a second degree to the extent of acquiring a PHD? In fact, if you hadn't even gone to school, you would still make this money. Even a wayside mechanic makes more than the salary you are receiving (as a lecturer)...So, the whole incentive system needs to be restructured" he said.

This is a ***barred word*** comment from an otherwise experienced professional and social commentator. The amount of money one makes shouldn't be linked to the years of formal schooling one has had (schooling is different from education) but rather the necessity and quality of services provided by a person. For example, if you live in Ghana and you get a phd in cultural psychology, what kind of service can you offer that would be more useful to the average ghanaian than a mechanic? Elsewhere in developed countries, people with technical and mechanical skills make more than so called professors. Even among university lecturers, those in technical and professional fields like finance, accounting, engineering make more than their colleagues in sociology or drama.
The NDC has boycotted the peace fm but it sees to it that Kwesi goes there to do its bidding.
Kwesi Pratt is a paid journalist, doing the bidding of his paymasters. He always speaks from his stomach and his opinions, which are guided by his subconscious mind, only satisfy his paymasters. You are sadly disappointed to hear him make certain pronouncements as a senior journalist, as he is.
Kwesi Pratt is really dangerous. I don’t understand why Peace FM always give him the platform to perpetuate this wicked agenda. So far as NDC is not in government, he will never wish this country well. How can the government afford all these allowances at this time?
Kwesi, I'm amazed at you that you of all people have forgotten that when it comes to choosing any profession, it's a matter of choice. Where is this infantile comparison of yours coming from????? Shayme on you. Am also daring you to make this university lecturer's pay slip public for all to see.....your lies are becoming too much......why??????
Pratt has outlived his usefulness as a Social Commentator
And you call this a bad economy? C’mon! Old age catch this man. He should stop talking before he starts throwing tantrums.
This is sad in the whole worldwide the self employed makes money than government and private employees what is this man talking about? Doesn’t he make money from his newspaper business than the lecturers?. And what makes you think that a lecturer is better than a mechanic so therefore they deserve better pay?
Uncle Kwesi stop this pettiness, what do you mean by wayside mechanics. They have chosen to be professors, didn't they know they can earn more by being a mechanic? In UK some binmen earn more than some vice chancellors, Oxford city council have a tall list of Oxford professors who wake up 1am to do cleaning for some hours before lectures. My aunt is a fish monger but has more money than her husband who is a district audit officer.
There's nothing wrong with that Mr Pratt. That entitlement mindset of deserving a higher pay because you have a first , second degree or PHD is wrong. Your income should be commensurate with your output. If a wayside mechanic fixes about 50 cars in a month do you expect him or her to earn less because they don't have those theory degrees. Here in the UK plumbers earn more money than bankers or Doctors in a year. They also have practical PHD in what they do in their field. Respect them and stop comparing them to some theory degree holders.
