A not-for-profit independent organization for journalists, Journalists Sanctuary International has presented protective equipment to Despite media to help prevent damaging injuries to its Frontline reporters in the event that they are attacked whiles doing their work.
Founded in January 2022, the NGO was founded by multiple award-winning journalist Latif Iddrisu of Joy News, the organization promises to give real meaning to the protection of journalists in Ghana and the rest of the world.
The organization has been set up to uphold the safety of journalists who at great personal cost, go to perilous places less travelled by other reporters and take a frontline position to report on issues that are given less, or ‘armchair’ news coverage because of the risks involved.
JSI does this by supplying Journalists with protective equipment (Military standard helmets and bulletproof vests). Additionally, expertly designed training on security and safety, and the significance of environmental awareness is offered to Journalists.
Presenting the protective gear to the team at the ship house building which hosts Peace FM and UTV, the Founder of the organization Latif Iddrisu said, "the presentation of the PPE is to shield and give confidence to reporters of UTV and Peace FM whenever they step out to gather news for their media outlets".
Latif added that
"the presentation of the military standard helmets and bulletproof vests is a symbolic gesture to get managers of media organizations to prioritize the protection of the reporters they put on the ground to go and bring the news"
Beyond the distribution of protective equipment and the specially designed safety training programs, Journalist Sanctuary International offers refresher training on journalism trends aimed at getting Reporters to stay relevant in a craft that is fast changing with time.
JSI also marshals, publishes, and takes action on behalf of Journalists who may come under any form of attack whiles doing their work anywhere in the world.
On his Deputy news Editor at UTV Obimpeh said, "the initiative by Journalists Sanctuary International is laudable and will help in our news-gathering process. With this (the protective gear), if we send any reporter out there, we know that he or she has some level of protection. He added that "This is the first time such intervention is taking place in the West African subregion and we commend you for taking up such an eye-opening step".
Latif Iddrisu has embarked on this course to bolster the frontier of journalism in Ghana and other parts of the world. Also paramount for him is "to prevent other journalists from suffering the injury I suffered at the hands of some officers of the Ghana Police service who assaulted me at the CID headquarters for doing my job back in 2018"
