The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has given the government a one week ultimatum to exempt pensions from the debt restructuring programme else it will advise itself.
At a press conference in Accra today, General Secretary of the TUC, Dr Yaw Baah, said the debt restructuring programme in its current form will impoverish workers.
The TUC has also kicked against the government’s decision to freeze pubic sector employment.
“What is the point of Free SHS if Ghanaians cannot secure jobs,” Dr Baah said.

Does this man knows that one of the immediate challenges of this most important human development policy is joblessness, even though, unemployment has been there since ages, and will continue to be there, even in more advance countries there are high numbers of unemployment, however, this does not take the value and importance of the policy in our national development and progress.
In fact Obiba, you have made my day with your comments. Wo ye Obiba ampa!
I am sorry to hear such a comment coming from a seasoned academic like Dr. Yaw Baah berating the free SHS and its impact on the emerging generation. Dr. should know that education is not just preparing people for jobs but also to provide critical thinking skills and greater discipline. Discipline in public life ensures peace and harmony, which in turn offer impetus to the forces of progress and prosperity. Maybe he comes from a rich family so he does not see the relevance of this game changing policy.
This is foolishness so because of there no job in the country We should stop our children from going to school.. think before you talk.
DR TUC , PLEASE YOU GOT IT WRONG HERE. EDUCATION IS NOT ONLY TO PROVIDE JOBS BUT TO ALSO EMPOWER THE RECEIPIENTS TO BE MENTALLY CREATIVE. GOVERNMENT CANNOT PROVIDE ALL THE JOBS IN THE COUNTRY . PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS ALSO HAVE TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING INGENUOUS . WHAT GOVERNMENT HAS TO DO IS TO PROVIDE INCENTIVES TO UNLEASH THE INGENUITY OF THESE GRADUATES. FOR EXAMPLE A POLICY LIKE REDUCING THE INCOME TAX RATE FOR PEOPLE WHO CREATE THEIR OWN JOBS WILL PUSH PEOPLE TO CREATE THINGS FOR THEMSELVES INSTEAD OF WAITING FOR GOVERNMENT TO EMPLOY THEM. DR AS A TRAINED MIND YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO KNOW BETTER.
What's this TUC boss talking about? The mentality of some of these respectable men sometimes baffles some of us. How can you rubbish free SHS because people cannot get employment. Is that all education is about. I am sorry for Ghana.
Because free SHS is to provide secondary education to all and not jobs. When a majority of the people are educated to at least the secondary level they develop resilience and confidence. The doctor should know that education is not just preparing people for jobs but also to provide critical thinking skills and greater discipline. Discipline in public life ensures peace and harmony, which in turn offer impetus to the forces of progress and prosperity.
