Two men mistaken for grasscutters have been gunned down in a bush during a hunting expedition.
The two were killed in separate incidents within two weeks in the Akuapem North and Asuogyaman districts of the Eastern Region.
The first incident occurred when a 72-year-old hunter, Kwabena Adu, shot a 40-year-old farmer while hunting at Anum in the Asuogyaman District two weeks ago.
The hunter has since been arrested by the Police, while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue. The hunter is reported to have mistaken the deceased as a grasscutter during the hunting.
The second incident involved a hunter, Anthony Kwame, 29, who gunned down his colleague hunter, Simon Gbemu, 43, killing him instantly after mistaking him for grasscutter during hunting expedition.
The suspect has been arrested by the Police.
The incident occurred at Asasekokor near Adawso in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Eastern.
The Deputy Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, Sgt Gideon Boateng, who confirmed both incidents to the DAILY HERITAGE said, during interrogation, the suspects admitted the offence, but explained that during the hunting expedition, they both saw leaves shaking in the bush and suspected they were animals and unsuspectingly shot towards that direction killing them instantly.
The Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Awuntubuge Awuni has vowed to clamp down on hunters in possession of unregistered arms. Meanwhile, the two hunters are being prepared to face prosecution.
