The commanding officer of the Formed Police Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Chief Superintendent Naa Hamsah Yakubu, has jabbed the Executive Director of policy think tank, IMANI Ghana, Franklin Cudjoe, saying he “must check himself”.
The officer’s comment comes after Franklin Cudjoe described the Police’s recent decision to suspend all motor vehicle checks as “absurd”. “IGP, you may have the power to bend the rules but not all rules Sir. This act of yours if true is banditry, lawless and encourages plunder on our roads.” he noted. But Chief Superintendent Naa Hamsah Yakubu, told the media on the sidelines of a Police press conference in Accra on Friday that, some organized groups had been unnecessarily criticizing the service for their performance over the years, yet chastise them when they takes steps to ensure quality policing service. SP Naa Yakubu said “we have over the last few years been leading something they call corruption perception index and every time we are rated first; the most corrupt institution, and the media picks it up, when you monitor closely fingers are pointed at our personnel on the roads.” He lamented that, “Don’t we have the right as a human institution to also look at our operational methods, to regain our lost image? And you turn around just for political reasons to want to accuse us; then I think you need to observe yourself too.”
He expressed shock the Executive Director of the IMANI Ghana would criticize the Police when they try to improve upon their operations even though he had accused them of performing badly in the past. “Franklin Cudjoe, I heard him comment about this and I think he needs to observe himself, because if you have always been in the forefront of accusing us as being the lead corrupt institution and we have reassigned ourselves and we are trying to redeem our image and you criticize the Police administration for putting things right, then I think that he is not right himself,” the officer said.
‘Police suspends vehicle checks’
The Police Service in a memo on Monday, October 3, ordered with immediate effect the suspension of all vehicle checks in the country.
It also said personnel are to cease the inspection of driver’s licenses and vehicle documents. Signed by the Commissioner of Police, Ransford Moses Ninson, it directed personnel on highway patrol to limit their work to inspection of cars for drugs and ammunition, only while officers of the Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD), are to be deployed only for traffic management duties.
‘Police investigates leaked memo’
Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, has launched investigations into the leakage of the internal memo from the Police Administration, that directed the heads of various units under the service on new policing arrangements.

I struggle to understand this directive by the police. Is it because checking licence and DVLA sticker takes too much time? How long does it take to read the sticker or scan for it's authenticity and to check the licence ID? I am tempted to believe that this is a political move to assuage commercial drivers who mostly vote for NDC. As for Iddi, if you knew you were right why did you give them 50 Cedis? And why would you leave your licence at home? Of course it is possible to forget it once in a while, but knowing the behaviour of Ghana police you should be more alert. They were waiting for that opportunity to exploit and collect a bribe from you. You know they don't play by the rules.
Did I hear you say road worthy vehicles? when some of the police vehicles are not suppose to be on the road. I do not have any problem with the police not checking license but my problem is some diabolic citizens will take this advantage to do their own thing. Ghana police check our cars to find out if we have illegal weapons but do not check license as directed by your superiors . IGP should have come out with the punishment that will be given to any policeman who will go contrary to the directives, because I am very optimistic that some deviant police officers will not obey him. MOTHER GHANA WE SALUTE YOU
Congratulations Ghana police.👍 Good move. Just few days before the directive, I was stope by police in kumasi and my drivers license was demanded, I told them I left it at home faraway Boamang Immediately they said I should park the car and go and bring It. I asked them if I drove carelessly or why are they Demanding for my drivers license, they were angry and Asked if I was going to teach them their job or to tell them when to demand for what? They started asking for everything , Warning triangle, lifting jack, fire extinguisher , unbelievably including spare tyre! I had all except license. They said is a crime to drive without my license with me. I was confused because I thought its only a crime if I don't Have it at all or can't produced it within a specified period Of time. They now handed me to different person who Advise me to give them something or else they will Send the car to the station and deal with me, they sounded funny to me because I didn't do anything wrong , the they could do was keep the car for me to travel to my village for the lecense but that will be expensive and time wasting So I gave them Ghc 50. They were happy and tried to be my Friend I pretended to be nice but I really hate them. I insulted them in my head and drove away. The leakage of the memo is a blessing in disguise . It creates the awareness it deserve. Next time when a corrupt Police officer stop me to ask for my license , I will have Something to tell him. As for franklin, he is only relevant to his children , I wonder If he is to his wife😏
Well, why do we this to ourselves Ghanaians? lets take our time and rethink about this directive. Do we know there have a lot of wee transportation in the country? arm robbers moving from one place to another couple with lawlessness on our roads. This will allow crazy things on the roads.
If the Police are worried about their image as an institution, they should take measures to check bribery within their ranks. The answer is not stopping the road checks. That is shirking their responsibility!
I have travelled the whole world and I never seen any country going the direction Ghana Police has chosen to stop motor checks on the road. This is going unqualified drivers and unroad worthy vehicles on the road, therefore coursing more accident on our roads. Ghana police please come again because there's more to it than than the reason you have put out.
Since that comment Franklin made about those ladys I have lost all respect for him and IMANI Ghana. He seems very shallow and id.iotic. If he had any dignity he would have apologised.
POLICE, BE CAREFUL!! DON'T ALLOW THIS CHAMELEON TO LURE YOU INTO ANY FRONTAL BATTLES. HE IS NOT WORTH IT!! I-G-N-O-R-E HIM!!
