The Ghana Police Service has kicked off a countrywide operation to crackdown on owners of unregistered motorbikes and vehicles.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) David Asante-Apeatu ordered for the arrest and prosecution of persons who “do not have proper registration” in a wireless message sent to all police commands in Ghana.
“These instructions are to be carried out with full vigour and must be robust,” the wireless message added.
There is an upsurge in “large number of motor bikes” plying roads nationwide “without registration number plates,” the IGP noted.
The message added: “Similarly unregistered vehicles ply the road. This unlawful act is gradually being accepted as normal and lawful. INGPOL directs all regional commanders to conduct nationwide clamp down on all unregistered motorbikes and vehicles.”
Heavily armed police personnel could be seen at vantage points in Accra ever since the directive was issued inspecting and impounding unregistered vehicles on the streets.
Security experts who have lauded the initiative said it will go a long way to curb crime in the system.

This is long overdue as stated by Asem. The commanders and others service personnel should be proactive than to wait for superior directive(s). It is becoming the norm in our country which should not be so. I am waiting to see when personnel would be asked to present reports when they are assigned on our roads. Look at the how our roads (eg GW ***barred word*** highway, Nima, Sarkin Zongo, some areas in Kumasi-Tafo, Suame etc.) are parked with out of road vehicles, unlicensed motor vehicles, creating traffic, accidents, pollution etc. I think the police officers on duty should report such things for immediate action to be taken. Owners of such vehicles should be given ultimatum to remove their vehicles or have them towed and fined accordingly.
George,I don't agree with you about the individuals selling their cars. What is needed is sale tax that should be paid to revenue authorities for sales made.
Mr IGP not only registration matters.they should arrest them if you don't have insurance.by law all engine machine must have be insured. no mercy law must work in the cities and rural areas too. Thanks.
long over due
Reactive. Sleeping on the job, it's called.
Another area requiring attention is the use of the road sides by vehicles during rush hour as well as use of in road markings by the V8's and other non marked security/emergency vehicles. I believe this can be solved if the ordinary ghanaian is empowered. The police MTTD should set up a whatsapp number and communicate to the public to send in 30sec-1min videos of vehicles mis-behaving this way. The said vehicles should be invited and heavily fine or persecuted. where they refuse to come the officers got out for them. The fine should be deterrent enough (i.e about Ghc1,000) such that persons sending in the whatsapp can benefit, I.e. share proceeds in 30:20:20:20:10 in favour of state:police service:arresting officer:WhatsApp sender: administration. I believe It will generate a lot of work for the unemployed and bring about discipline on the roads because one can not tell who and when the video one will be sent through. Such videos can even been shown on the major TV networks whilst inviting owners of the vehicle. A very simple solution road indiscipline with potential of generating revenue.
We appreciate the effort to crack down criminals but have we thought of how businesses will be affected? For so long a time I wondered why our governments do not have laws that will protect the business of car selling in the country. Every individual has the right to drive their car around while selling them. What else do we expect CRIMES and DISORDERS within the society. I suggest anyone who wants to engage in car selling should be given a unique number that they will use as dealers. This will put a control and revenue generation for the country.
It's a laudable idea but why this time. It is long overdue. We expect people in positions to put more actions in the system. Everything seem to be deteriorating.
