The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) says it’s putting certain measures in place to help minimize gas explosions at the various gas filling stations in the country.
To this end, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) outlets nationwide will no longer be allowed to refill cylinders at their plants.
Instead, all gas cylinders will be filled by cylinder bottling plants for onward delivery to retail outlets.
Individuals and organisations that use LPG cylinders will now go to LPG retail outlets with their empty cylinders to exchange them for filled ones and pay for them.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NPA, Hassan Tampuli, who disclosed this, noted that the initiative was under a comprehensive national policy aimed at halting gas explosions at gas filling outlets.
He was interacting with journalists in the Western Region on the role of the media in ensuring public safety as far as the usage of gas is concerned.
He pointed out that the cylinder bottling companies would be solely responsible for the cylinders that would be handed over to the public.
“They will be in charge of safety and quality checks. This will go a long way to save the lives of innocent Ghanaians,” he indicated.
He also said that a pipeline would be laid from the source of supply of the product to supply gas to inhabitants of residential areas in the country.
Mr Tampuli stressed that the ultimate aim of the NPA is to prevent gas explosions which have so far claimed many innocent lives and injured others in the country.
He pointed out that the modalities and timelines for the policy would soon be made known.
He indicated that currently, some African countries, including Benin, Tanzania, Kenya and some East African countries, are implementing a similar LPG programme.
He said the NPA was on course to ensuring that all gas filling plants and fuel filling stations adhere to safety standards, while new policies would soon be rolled out to avoid needless explosions.
He appealed to the media to use their outlets to educate individuals who use gas for domestic purposes on some safety measures.

I went to china they have LPG retail outlet.it is never primitive what is primitive is the cylinder circulation where you take your empty to an outlet for a filled cylinder.Nigerians tried the cylinder circulation method and fail they have now reverted to the use of retail outlet. Now let me educate you in the late 90's there were 2 companies in Ghana that engaged in the cylinder circulation business namely Goil and Elf.This created an oligopoly in the market. Now as time went by the usage of LPG increased so the government at that time decided to issue licenses to companies to also open up retail outlet to create a competitive market. Now the government wants you to believe that it's because of the recent fire outbreaks that has led to this conclusion. The real fact is that there is a $350m facility by the world bank aimed at expanding the usage of LPG in Africa so the government has to come out with a plan to show how they intend to utilize this money so in doing so the government has contracted puma energy which is not an indigenous company to build this facility to enable them gain access to the facility. So my question is should we sacrifice the job security of individuals for $350m world bank facility? Or do we loan the monies to the LPG companies for them to expand and employ more people .Interesting time ahead
This the best way forward as been done in advance countries. The era of refilling at gas filling station is untenable n a primitive idea. Even in some African countries such as Sierra Leone, Egypt, etc, you carry your empty cylinder to the nearest gas depot n pick a filled cylinder. They don't allow filling at the retail centers. I fully support this idea coz we cannot continue to live in a weird and backward practices. It is just similar to buying Coca Cola drinks. take your empty cylinder to the nearest depot n pick a already filled cylinder.
Is this tampuli or whatever he calls himself serious . Do you know how much it cost to establish an LPG station you have issued licences for construction . What is more dangerous than lying pipes to setrvice individualw in their homes. Common water pipes are being destroyed by road and other contractors etc. What happens to employment.please educated and train people in handling lpg than destroying peoples life. ***barred word*** ***barred word***
Where from this weird and weak thinking.....
Can we get some strategic thinking people up in NPA?????? Are we moving forward as a nation or retrogressing
***barred word*** at Its peak so what happens to people who work at these stations do they get sacked? That about those who have gone for loans in putting up these stations? Are we doing this to satisfy some individuals interest? This policy was first implemented in Ghana around 1995 worked for some time because few people used LPG at that the me but as more and more people began using LPG the system failed the countries you tampuli mentioned are now starting to use LPG they will change their policy when more and more people start using LPG.This is a very dangerous policy to implement. This government is full of clueless and ***barred word*** individuals
How can i bring my cylinder in exchange of someone's cylinder that has been filled already? This wont work so stop talking koraa, someone will buy an expensive plastic cylinder which is also transparent to see the level of ur gass and u expect the person to exchange it for a filled one which may not be same quality as hers. Go and come back again
