After almost two years since fire gutted their Ridge Residence, the former First Couple, the Rawlingses, are still grappling with the reality of having no official house of their own.
The former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, over the weekend on her Thank You tour corrected an impression by government that the construction works on the house were far advanced.
According to her, not even one shovel of sand has been deposited at our Ridge Residence which fire gutted some months ago: I would have been the first person to come round and inform you that government has renovated our Ridge Residence.
It is a lie, she stressed.
When contacted for governments reaction to the former First Ladys statement, a deputy Minister for Information, Baba Jamal, declined to comment on the issue, and rather asserted that the NDC founder, Jerry John Rawlings, is not the only president of Ghana and that the issue of where he lives is not an important matter for discussion.
Baba Jamal said there are more important matters for government to deal with instead of such unnecessary distractions. Asked how far government has gone with the reconstruction of the gutted residence of Mr. Rawlings, the Deputy Minister replied, I wont waste my time on that issue, adding, if there are more important matters to be discussed, lets discuss them.
Baba Jamal said there are proper channels Mrs. Rawlings can use if she thinks her husband is not being treated well under this NDC government and not these unnecessary distractions.
The residence of the former First Family was gutted by an inferno on Valentines Day February 14, 2010. Over a year on, many are expecting the former president to have been resettled by a government formed by his own party. However, it would seem that the frosty relation between the Rawlingses and the Mills led government is affecting governments decision to resettle the former president in a decent accommodation.
And this has left many NDC supporters to wonder why the NDC founder remains in a village house donated to him by a friend instead of being accommodated by government.
