The President of Ghana, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, has admonished his fellow politicians to put behind all parochial interest and make it a priority for Ghanaians to have a peaceful atmosphere to vote this year.
President Mills said the authenticity of an election is determined by a peaceful atmosphere and that should be the aim of every Ghanaian as the country gears up for the December polls.
This is my appeal to everyone. The power to elect a leader rests with the people and not within anybody else. You cannot force anyone on the people so lets make sure the people are given a free atmosphere within which to vote and make their choice, President Mills told the media on Thursday.
President Mills, who is contesting the elections in a bid to secure a second term, said in spite of the unprecedented achievements of his government, his appointees need to do more to win the hearts of the electorate.
One is not complacent, President Mills opined. We have to work hard so that the people of Ghana will continue to repose confidence in us.
But the important thing is that we must all vote in a rather peaceful atmosphere. That is what election is all about. We want Ghana to be peaceful before, during and after the elections, he added.
