Failure or inability of any government official to represent the state at this years Radio & Television Programme (RTP) Awards has been described by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako as very disappointing.
Chairman Wontumi, as he is affectionately known said the absence of any government functionary at the awards programme is smack of insensitivity and lack of commitment towards the promotion and development of journalism in Ghana.
He made the statement on Saturday October 4th 2014, after participating in the Awards ceremony which saw journalist from the Radio and Television media houses been awarded for their meritorious service to listeners and viewers.
Chairman Wontumi said government has a responsibility to ensure the total promotion and development of the media industry as a means to safeguarding Ghanas democracy since the media is perceived as the fourth estate of the realm and also plays a watchdog role in our society.
M
r. Antwi Boasiako suggested to government to either support or fund entirely the Award Ceremony and institute a media welfare fund to cater for and support media practitioners who might suffer some fatality or injustice in the course of exercising their duty.
The NPP fire brand commended the organisers of the programme for their sense of innovation as well as effort to recognize excelling talents within the Radio & Television industry.
He however advised the organisers to broaden the award category in future to include Best Producer category adding that the producers are the unseen and unheard anchors behind most excellent presenters and therefore deserve some recognition.
He also expressed the hope that future Awards programmes would broaden the scope and recognize the role of hundreds of other Radio & Television presenters outside Accra and Kumasi.
He commended this years winners and appealed to them to use their experiences to help promote media development in the country.
