President John Dramani Mahama has taken a swipe at the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo, for opting out of Wednesday’s presidential debate.
The NPP said its decision not to participate in the National Commission for Civic Education and GBC debate was based on the fact that it is pre-occupied with equally important things.
But in his introductory remark during the debate Wednesday, President Mahama, who proud himself as the first sitting president to participate in a debate, described Nana Akufo-Addo’s decision as bad.
“It is indeed bad that the leader of the opposition has opted out. It is usually the opposition that is keen to have a debate with the incumbent but here I am,” he said.
The debate seeks to give the candidates an opportunity sell their policies and programmes to electorate to help them make an informed decision to before they go to the polls on December 7.
It was participated by the presidential candidates of the Progressive People’s Party, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom; Convention People’s Party, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet; National Democratic Congress, John Mahama; People’s National Convention, Dr Edward Mahama and independent candidate Jacob Osei Yeboah.
“I feel very proud that I’m the first sitting president to have participated in a debate in 2012 and I’m participating again,” President Mahama said.
President Mahama had earlier expressed his readiness to debate Nana Akufo-Addo one-on-one to discounts the numerous claims of mismanagement by his government.
“How can I run from a debate? I want a productive debate, one on one with Nana Akufo-Addo. What they are talking about is the IEA. I want a debate on all the contentious issues he has raised. And I will respond and Ghanaians will be the judge,” the President had said earlier.

Mr. ***barred word*** President the last time i checked debate was neither food or job please you debated other presidential aspirate soo then what is your problem. This goes to confirm the facts that Nana is a trailblazer you need him to boost your image sorry Mr. President. Give as a break from all this loose talk and start preparing your handling over notes.
I laugh mahama saaaaahhhhhhhhhh, today he wants a debate.
It is unfortunate indeed that an opposition candidate is rather running away from debates. No matter where it takes place you should be happy to partake in it and throw all the punches there are. Strange that Nana rather chose to stay away. Too many bad advisors...and you will always have ***barred word*** NPP members making a lot of uninformed noise. You will lose again Botoooooo.
I thought with your main competitor out of the way you will be free to sell your ideas to Ghanaians easily. If you had such an opportunity but failed to use it then it borders on incompetence. How does Nana come in here? Your attacks show that the only message you have for Ghanaians is to insult Nana and insults don't win election. Nana's absence might have taken the fireworks out of the debate to your dismay, which means Nana is the man of the moment. CHANGE IS COMING
Prez. Mahama cant organise a debate in shadows, having all the questions and expect Nana to be part.most of NCCE various departments heads were appointed by Prez. Mahama, so why should Nana overlook this and debate..over the years IEA has been organizing debates... Infact Prez. Mahama appointed the head of IEA as his Education Minister, now that she is no more there to give the questions to him, he declined from participating...julor..tthief..Prez. Mahama u cant choose who and where to debate? we know Nana's Message n yours(full of corruption). change is coming
AAAH Mahama! So you want to debate the Wise Man (Nana Addo) and you have decided where it should be done. You are not serious at all! WE THE YOUTH HAVE SUFFERED A LOT IN YOUR BAD GOVERNANCE. IT IS ENOUGH OOOOOH KO!!!! TIME ASO! TIME ASO!! TIME ASOOOOOOO!!!
Mr President ur debate is with Ghanaians not Nana. Tell Ghanaians how uve used the oil money, the Loans taken and the taxes weve paid to u. All your so called infrastructure development plus statutory payment amounted to ghc16 billion why uve borrowed ghc120billion. what did you do with the difference of ghc104billion. is it a matter of creat. loot and share.
