Former Deputy Minister of Finance, Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, has backed the nomination of three deputy finance ministers, describing it as crucial due to the current nature of Ghana's economy.
Mr. Ricketts-Hagan believes the workload requirements of the Ministry of Finance means more than two deputies can help make effective execution of tasks would achievable.
"Additional person may not be needed, but an additional person can be helpful. You can break the Ministry of Finance into two: the Finance and Economic Planning . . . the schedule of the other Deputy Minister is to do economic planning and you have the other [deputy minister] doing the budgeting.
"But there is a third area which is popping its face up at the Ministry and that is the management of the financial economics that is taking place at the ministry, and that is to do with debt management, going to the bond market, the PID [Public Investment Division] area, which is to do with investment, the PPP [Public-Private Partnership] and the relations with financial institutions," he said.
The Nana Akufo-Addo-led government has been criticised following the nomination of three deputy ministers for some ministries.
However, Mr Ricketts-Hagan notes that the three deputy ministers for the Finance Ministry may not be excessive if the workload there is taken into consideration.
He states that although the public servants play a critical role at the Finance Ministry by providing important technical support, "the ministerial position provides political leadership" that gets jobs done on time.
This political leadership, he adds, is also important to effectively drive the vision of government.
"For instance if you look at the PPP [Public-Private Partnership], not much happened at the PPP and one of the reasons is that the deputy minister responsible for economic planning was the same minister who is also responsible for PID and all that so you realise that there is a lot going on . . . for PPP to be driven, you need some political leadership," he said.

experience they say is the best teacher, Mr. Hagan is an NDC man but because of his experienced at the finance ministry he has been honest with himself to support what the Prez did. is only those who do not know anything makes the most noise. i think it will be better to appoint more people to utilize the country's revenue to the benefit of citizen than to appoint less incompetent minister to loot and share at the expense of tax payers money. Nana knows what he's doing.
I am already disappointed in the NPP. 110 ministers and counting. This is ridiculous. I was expecting this new government to be lean and mean but as it stands we have a conduit for waste. 1 district 1 factory, 1 village 1 dam, etc. and what do we have as for priority, a national cathedral. Ghana needs a better alternative and that cannot be NDC.
Cost benefit is the name of the game. If 200 ministers will be appointed to stop the leakages so be it. Why are people talking about record? Who is competing who? Ghanaians want to have a feel of Ghana . Ride on Nana. Everything has its beginning. So how state properties were looted at the Presidency? Because nobody was in charge. NPP has the men Nana use them to save mother Ghana.
Mr. Wrikkets, thank you so much. Kindly get in touch with the IMANI founder and educate him a bit. Sometimes I am convinced that most of the people who contribute to our political dispensation had not really work in any corporate or public institutions before let alone be part of management with responsibilities to ensure that key results areas (KRA'S)or Key Performance indicators (KPI's, are met. Nana, you really possess the vision. Carry On.
A very level headed person you are. Politics aside and say it as it is. Thank you sir.
