The New Patriotic Party (NPP) government should be apologizing to Ghanaians for its inability to fully implement the free secondary education policy as promised over the years, the Minority in Parliament has stated.
The Minority, at a press conference on Monday, said: “if the NPP had any modicum of respect for the good people of Ghana, they should at the very least be apologizing to Ghanaian for their inability to fulfill the promise for which they were voted.”
“The continued claim by President Akufo-Addo and his acolytes that they have fulfilled their Universal Free SHS for all promise is simply hypocritical,” the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, addressing the press, said.
As the first beneficiaries of the free secondary education start to register in schools nationwide, the Minority is still aggrieved the policy does not include continuing students.
For the Minority, it was a pure irony that the year groups the NPP campaigned to ahead of the 2016 elections would not enjoy the Free SHS policy.
‘Free SHS promise was a hoax’
This aside, Mr. Iddrisu said the skeptics of the policy had also been justified.
“By its inability to roll out Free SHS to cover those in second and third years, the NPP has only successfully vindicated those who said Akufo-Addo’s Free SHS promise was a hoax. What we have have been presented by the NPP is simply another version of Progressively Free SHS for some first years students.”
In the NPP’s time in opposition, the Mahama administration in 2014 started what it called the progressive introduction of free secondary education. This brand of free education was to start primarily with only day students.
At its peak, the progressive free secondary education covered about 500,000 students.
Class division in SHS
The Minority warned further that “what will emerge in our SHSs is a category of fee-paying studies for the wards of parents who can afford to pay fees for their wards and another category of so-called free SHS students thus introducing a class system into our public SHSs”

how did you start jhs and shs? did it include continuing students? even ayalolo bus could not cover the whole of Accra. take a hike
I have a feeling Haruna Iddrisu is being pushed into a big hole where he cannot come back to lead the NDC in the near future. Mr. Minority Leader, shine your eyes as the Nigerians will say. In 2020 campaign, the NPP will only tell Ghanaians that you will scrap this novelty if they vote for you as you collapsed the NHS and we will all believe them. You better start seeing the light
Haruna it is you and your party that should be apologising to Ghanaians for preventing Ghanaians from benefiting from the resources of this country. For 8 years your government invested in dubious projects and for the few good projects you implemented you inflated the prices so much it defeated rge purpose and benefit to be derived from such projects. In 8 months some other government has initiated a huge policy and implemented it to the benefit of all Ghanaians. The impact of this policy is massive. I may not benefit directly but I am happy that other Ghanaians who are less fortunate and struggle to make ends meet will get a relief when their children get to SHS. I am glad I am finally seeing leadership at play. The man Nana Addo dreams big, has a vision for Ghana and we will see a different Ghana in the coming years. From the utterances of these NDC leaders my biggest fear is the NDC will collapse this intervention should they win power anytime soon just like they nearly did with NHIS.
Haruna please don't create unnecessary enemies with this pose of yours. criticizing everything both good and bad. Please come back on track and don't be side kicked by your party
I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND THESE GUYS. NDC SHOULD RATHER BE APOLOGIZING TO GHANAIANS AND THE SECON AND THIRD YEAR STUDENTS. THEY SHOULD HAVE STARTED IT DURING THEIR TENOR. KUDOS TO NPP. IAM A NEW CONVERT TO NPP. I WILL ADVISE ALL VOLTARIANS TO CONVERT NOW.
These bunch of crass corrupt, bas-ta-rds, lazy, ***barred word***, tribal bigotry, ***barred word*** cri-min-als in the minority are so annoying! They chose our money for corruption, create, loot and share when they had the opportunity to rule! Why no press conference on the ***barred word*** SSNIT and other terrible corruption under their rule! Crazy id-io-ts! God punish all of them!
Haruna iddrisu is a disgrace to himself, his wifes and family, his party and this our dear motherland. Common ssensse are not common to ppl like him. Trulu truly I say unto you NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU
Bunch of dem0ns !!!
Are you serious Haruna? I don't expect you to be saying this knowing very well that as a policy it must start from somewhere. Then why don't you make the argument that all those past SHS student should go for refunds of their fees because there is free SHS policy? Please you folks should make sensible arguments and be serious and effective as an opposition party. Don't just talk for talking sakes else you would be referred to as stup*d. ***barred word***!
Haruna is gradually loosing the little respect of many Ghanaians. He shouldn't be a puppet in the hands of the incompetent leadership of his party just because he is the minority leader. How can progressively free which covered only day students benefit over 500,000 students when the total enrollment for both day and boarding continuing students is less than 600,000. What the minority is doing is just putting pepper in our wounds. INCOMPETENT EVEN IN OPPOSITION. TWEEEEAH
