Two days ago, a health-related article was published by renowned American News Agency New York Times on obesity. The article sought to look at the causes of obesity and based their research on Ghana’s own franchise of America’s Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC).
In addition to indicating that having a meal at the popular restaurant was a ‘social status’ the report called President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo ‘round-faced’ and ‘overweight’. That portion of the article was captioned, “Like many of his countrymen, the round-faced president himself is overweight”.
Many Ghanaians did not take kindly to the description given to the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Army and took to their social media handles to express their displeasure at the distasteful words used.
Many people argued that describing someone as obese or overweight in the Western world was seen as an insult and many people took offence in that.
The article also insinuated that even though the president was concerned about the increasing number of fast food restaurants in the country, very little was being done to avert the risks that come with eating junk food.
Some social media users had this to say:

Did the president get "overweight" over the last 8 months and from eating at KFC? Dotards.
I perfectly agreed with the news paper. Our president is really overweight these days. Just look at his stomach... as for his face hmmmm. Anyway let,s appreciate our own, afer all he is our president abi..
To those dumb, st-upi-d NDc lobotomised followers who think that their day is made when their president is insulted,Look at almighty America.Look at their leader. Is that what you would like your ten year old grow up to be like ?Let us learn to accept our own .American journalists are not necessarily the best in the world. Some of them can see only as far as their noses. Round or obese we like our leader .In fact I would choose him any day over an erratic feather-brained chap like Trump or a thiev1ng mega kleptomaniac like John Mahama.
Bcos nana will not bow to ur pressure you will find ways and means to insult him.NO concession ooo tom.You pple shd go hell, we will also buy made in ghana goods. We will not depend so much on you .You westeners wants blacks always to saying master master..That time is past and gone dadaada.Go on insulting him as for us ghanafo) we still love him whether obese or anything Nana all the way.
Ojam, what was exemplary about Nana's performance at the UN? Do the heads of State and presidents go there to be assessed based on their speeches? Is it because Nana Addo requested for reforms in the UN that you call it exemplary? If so, then I beg to differ. Politicians are ready to say nice things on paper but it does not reach anywhere? We all know that Nana is short. Take a second look at him nowadays and you will notice that he has put on weight. If you are short and you put on weight, you become round in some way, your face becomes round and Nana himself wears round spectacles so you will agree with me that what the New York Times is saying is true.
Your line of reasoning is very shallow, no wonder you call yourself ojam. Did you listen to the speech of mugabe? Compare it to your obese president and tell me your president speech was more excellent.
Ghanaians should learn to read between the lines and therefore understand the undercurrent of certain articles in newspapers in the West where it pertains to the black person from Africa. Nana Addo's performance at the UN summit was so exemplary that it made their almighty Donald Trump and others look uneducated therefore something must be written to tarnish the shine of the African leader. Ask any well educated African professional working in the West to tell you their story about the lengths the system will go to to refuse them promotion let alone recognize their talent, and you will then begin to understand why such a comment was made about Nana Addo.
Just invite the editor of the New York Times to Ghana for him to face all Ghanaians.
