The suspended General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) Kwabena Agyapong has described as unconstitutional, his being on suspension for two years.
According to him, the NPP constitution does not provide for that and didn’t envisage the General Secretary of the party to be absent from his job, adding that he hopes “good sense will prevail” on the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to get him reinstated.
The NEC of NPP in September 2015 upheld the decision of the Disciplinary Committee to suspend indefinitely Kwabena Agyapong, together with the National Chairman, Paul Afoko; 2nd Vice Charman, Sammy Crabbe, for working against the party’s chances of winning the 2016 elections.
Dissatisfied with the decision, Messrs Afoko and Crabbe filed a suit over their suspension, but both suits were thrown out by the court.
Two years after the suspension, some constituency and polling station executives of the NPP have petitioned the party’s hierarchy for the reinstatement of Mr. Agyapong.
They maintain that unlike Afoko and Crabbe, Agyapong did not seek legal action and that is a proof of his loyalty to the party. The petitioners argued that, his conduct towards the party, even after his indefinite suspension in 2015 and his monetary contribution to the party’s campaign ahead of the 2016 general election, was evidence of his unwavering loyalty.
Speaking to Joy FM on the sidelines of the NPP extraordinary national delegates conference in Kumasi on Sunday, Kwabena Agyepong the call for his reinstatement is very much justified.
“I think being on suspension for two years is too long, our constitution doesn’t provide for that. We didn’t envisage that the General Secretary of the party to be absent from his job for two years…it’s not there but I hope good sense will prevail. I’m happy with myself and I thank God for the heart that I have, I’m very content.”
