A former Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture under the erstwhile John Mahama administration, Dr. Hannah Bissiw, last week Friday, led a demonstration dubbed ‘Value for life campaign’ to speak against inadequate facilities at the nation’s premier hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).
The demonstrators marched to the KBTH administration to present a petition to the management of the hospital.
The demonstrators carried placards which read, “Korle Bu CT scan not working”, ” Save Korle Bu, get CT scan”, “Value life!”, “Let’s stop, no bed syndrome”, “Stop plastic chairs services”, and “A Teaching Hospital without CT scan?”.
Others are “Great staff, poor equipment”, “We don’t want to die!”, “Who is responsible?”, “Mothers are dying, children are dying”, “We need more beds”, “More ambulances than 275 party cars”, and “Bring back CT scan”.
Dr. Hannah Bissiw told journalists after presenting the petition that the march was necessitated by malfunctioning CT scan equipment at the hospital over the past six months.
According to her, patients are not getting the best of treatment from the facility that was supposed to be the last resort for health care in the country.
She said the CT scan at the facility was not functioning, and that patients were being turned away as a result. She argued that every Ghanaian should have access to quality healthcare, and that the government has no excuse to deny them this right.
The former Deputy Minister noted that the current situation, where patients are receiving treatment on plastic chairs instead of lying on beds, was not the best, and called for an immediate solution to the problem.
She further told the journalists that the incident that led to the passing away of a 70-year-old man should not be repeated in future.
In response to the petition, Mustapha Salifu, Public Relations Officer of the KBTH, admitted that the hospital’s CT scan was not working, but the ministry had duly given approval for it to be fixed, and had also promised to provide another CT scan and MRI to complement the existing ones.
He could, however, not tell when the equipment will be arriving.
Since the demo coincided with the inauguration of the Board of Directors of Korle Bu, the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, his deputies and other officials of from the ministry, were compelled to abandon an intended tour of the facility after the inauguration.

I support the demonstration. My only problem is the Vet Dr who led it. Not because she's a vet Dr but because this is the very person who collected back her donation of hospital equipment when she lost the elections. I blame the NPP government for some of these noises. The bureaucracy is too much. Doesnt the hospital have a maintenance department that has programs for repairs, maintenance, and replacements? Doesnt the management see the need to have priorities? Please Government, your inactions are to blame for these unnecessary demanstrations that give way to these NDC crooks to capitalize on frivolities. Think well. Up your game.
Did the hospitals start deteriorating 2 years ago? Hanna Bissiw the "dog Doctor" use your precious time mpw that you are jobless to treat dogs in your constituency and I know they will appreciate that immensely.
I thought after being trained with the tax payer money, Hannah Bissiw will be at the poultry farm trying to help stop the spread of the Bird Flu which is threatening poultry farmers in the country. After all she collected the beds she donated to the facility in her constituency after losing the election. I am surprised she is now talking about saving human lives. SHAME!SHAME! SHAME!
THIS USE*ESS ***barred word*** DOCTOR WHO COLLECTED HOSPITAL BEDS SHE PURCHASED FROM THE COMMON FUND. WHAT IS SHE SAYING? YOUR ndc GAVE WOYOME GHC54 MILLION FROM WHICH YOU BUILT YOUR PARTY OFFICE. YOU HAVE NO SHAME IN YOUR EYES. WHEN DID YOUR PARTY LEAVE OFFICE OR HAS MAHAMA GONE TO COLLECT THE BEDS HE BOUGHT FOR KORLE BU HOSPITAL AS YOU DID IN YOUR CONSTITUENCY? ***barred word*** DOG DOCTOR.
Is she serious at all? Is the problem a new problem? This has been an age long thing even during the the NDC regime! So where lies her reasons?!!! I am sorry for her.....
275 buses? Was that procured with government money or from the MOH budget for the NPP constituencies. These guys wil harp onto anything for propaganda. Some people are personally building hospital, donating equipment etc.but you are just demonstrating. Is that what leadership or opposition activism all about? Perhaps this is just to get some attention.
This woman does not know what is called shame at all. After collecting the beds she donated to a hospital after losing an election, she is leading a demonstration for inadequate beds in Korle Bu, SHAME!
Rather than using that energy to mobilise funds for the hospital, you are rather demonstrating. What can a demonstration do? Will it provide the facilities? Or you expect the management of the hospital to get the facilities out of thin air when you demonstrate? Irrit@nt!
Is this the same lady who went to collect the beds she donated to a hospital after she lost the election. God help us. it is good to be in opposition it opens your eyes.
non sense! what did she and her ***barred word*** party do when they were in government for eight years?
