National Democratic Congress [NDC] Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, wants the Akufo-Addo government to facilitate the construction of a national center of worship for other religious groups in the country.
His demand follows the current controversy surrounding the construction of a 5000-seater national cathedral in Accra.
Ghanaians have expressed mixed feelings over government’s decision to relocate the residence of about nine judges as a result of the project. Some have described the government’s decision to demolish homes of the judges to pave the way for the construction of the cathedral as wasteful and unnecessary.
Speaking on Citi TV’s Breakfast Daily, the Tamale North legislator said it would only be fair on the part of government if same is replicated for other religious groups in the country.
“If that is government’s decision and they find it important, I have nothing against it. But you see, this is not a decision by the Christian community. It is a decision of the government to give them a national cathedral. Maybe when they finish, they will give us too a national mosque, and they will give the traditional believers a national shrine too.”
“They do not have to wait for another faith to ask. Just like how they have taken this decision to dash a national cathedral to the Christian community, we expect them to do that. It should not be about another faith asking.”
President Nana Akufo-Addo in 2017 cut the sod for the construction of a National Cathedral to serve as a national non-denominational Christian worship center for the country.
But the relocation of the judges was only confirmed in writing on July 24, in a letter from the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry.
Justice Julius Ansah admitted that this was not proper.
“Although I admit that since the agreement in principle had been reached, it would have been proper to give you a hint at least.”
In the long term, the government is constructing new residences for judges at Cantonments.
“The government has committed to construct 21 new bungalows on the second Circular road, Cantonment, to replace the old ones affected by the project. Construction of the new bungalow is expected to be completed and handed over to the Service by January 2020.”
In the meantime, the judges have been provided with “temporary residential buildings.”
Financiers of the cathedral will pay the temporary accommodation for the judicial staff including judges residing along the area earmarked for the national cathedral project.
The affected judges are; Justice F. Kusi Appiah, Justice Mariama Owusu, Justice Avril Lovelace-Johnson, Justice Magaret Welbourne, Justice Saeed Kwaku Gyan, Justice Lawrence L. Mensah, Justice Gbiel S. Suurbareh and Justice Anthony Oppong.
President Nana Akufo-Addo has reportedly been petitioned to reconsider the plan to relocate the judges.

Govt should just stop the so call Hajj sponsoring though i don't believe govt do fund hajj pilgrimage all i know for sure is you pay and go.
I think some muslem are just anti christian. anything that is christ centered they wants to fight against. These Islamic guys ***barred word***. When did they discover that government involvement in muslim pilgrimage is bad. anything that is of christian origin people wants to fight against. sometimes I even get surprise that the most vociferous of them all are the same christians. I haven't seen a muslim fighting against the own course except believer. its a shame. the cathedral should continue.
Government will rather build Buddhist Monastery and Hindu temples,***barred word***,esereba you are lucky to get some little education, you would have carry ***barred word***. Daawa konko come again.
The government from henceforth stop wasting a pesewa on Muslims Hajj to Mecca. Again the Zongo development fund is going to develop the Muslim communities at the expenses of other tax payers so if Suhuyini thinks only Muslims should enjoy the government support at the expense of Christians the government should not waste our money on them. Anything going to Christians and aslo the people of Ashanti region is a taboo to NDC and its sycophants but when it is going to the Muslims and also the northern region then it is holy, what a division party is this
Everything in Ghana is politicized. This explains why african's are where we are today. In my subtle opinion, the criteria for selection of MPS should be reviewed, because there are many more people including Suhuyini whose contribution does not push the country forward in terms of development. When his party was even in power, he never made any meaningful contribution. He just talks k3k3. This article is just to divide us and not to foster development.
Suhuyini in as much as I share a common political belv with u....u ve acted indiscretionally on this matter''''have u 4gotten how much govt spends on pilgrim? fasting gifts and items? sallah donations? pls dont spark unwanted religious tension
Brain*less little boy in parliament. If you care to know government spends million of Ghana Cedis to finance your annual pilgrimage to Mecca. Are you aware of that. When blocked headed persons find themselves in parliament, this is the result. A baby with a very sharp teeth.
LOOK AT THIS IDIOTTTT CALLED MP.ATTENTION SEEKER WHO DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.NO SENSIBLE PERSON WILL SAY THAT.
The government just cleared a ghc16m Hajj debt from 2016, aside the almost ghc5m spent annually by government to sponsor Muslims for Hajj. The new Central Mosque under construction at Kanda is sitting on Prime government land. Did they buy that land. The least any government can do for 70% of it citizens is to provide land for them to construct their own place of worship at their OWN COST. Suhiyini and his ungrateful Muslim friends should not dare us, else some of us will push every government to stop facilitating Hajj programmes for them at the expense of the tax payer.
NDC'S TACTIC TO POLITICAL POWER IS THROUGH TRIBALISM, FANNING TRIBAL CONFLICTS, INSULTS, PROPAGANDA, PURE LIES, DIVIDE AND RULE AND ALL THE NEGATIVES. I AM LOOKING FOR THE DAY WHEN THIS GROUP OF GANGSTERS UNDER THE NAME OF A POLITICAL PARTY WILL BE OUTLAWED TO GIVE GHANA PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT.
