Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Akufo-Addo government to apologise to Ghanaians for making a u-turn on its position on the state contracting loans to finance projects.
In opposition, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) criticised the Mahama administration for taking loans to develop the country and promised to do things differently when elected.
But that promise has not been kept by the NPP. In its first 18 months, the Akufo-Addo government borrowed nearly eight billion dollars. That is approximately 40 billion Ghana Cedis.
And President Akufo-Addo last week said that his government would borrow to finance its programmes, adding that even the USA borrows.
Addressing delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Tantra Hills, Accra in the Trobu constituency on Monday, Mr Mahama pointed out that the government has made a uturn on the issue of loans and therefore called on it to apologise for its earlier attack on the NDC.
“We have all your quotations on loans”, he added.
Mr Mahama said when the NDC was in government and borrowed to invest in assets such as hospitals, roads, bridges, interchanges, ports expansion, electricity and water, among many others, the NPP consistently criticised the government.
“So today if you have turned around and you have seen that you can borrow and invest in assets, then the first thing you do is to apologise and say sorry to Ghanaians. But when u behave as if we don’t know what you said, and say even the US is borrowing. And so what?" he quizzed.
He said after borrowing almost GHC 40 billion, the NPP cannot tell Ghanaians what it has used the money.
Mr Mahama also rejected the claim by the NPP government that, it is using some of the borrowed money to service the debt behind left by the NDC government. He said the NDC in power also paid some of the loans left behind by the NPP administration, citing the Eurobond as an example.

Mahama won’t run in 2020 — Family Date: Jan 10 , 2017 , 07:35 BY: Seth J. Bokpe Category: Politics Former President John Mahama Former President John Mahama 122 Shares 120 Just three days after the curtains closed on his tenure, there is mounting debate between former President John Dramani Mahama’s family and a section of the party he led into the 2016 elections over his political future. While his immediate family insists that the former President should call time on local politics, some leaders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including Mr Kofi Adams, its National Organiser, and Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, the Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, have rejected the idea, insisting that Ghana’s first one-term President is the NDC’s best bet for Election 2020. Speaking to a group of senior journalists ahead of last weekend’s swearing-in of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo, former President Mahama’s younger brother and Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners, Mr Ibrahim Mahama, said the former President’s family had been advising him not to contest the NDC primary to select a candidate for 2020, adding: “He (former President Mahama) agreed with us.” Ibrahim Mahama (left) and John Mahama “John has given his all in politics to the NDC and Ghana and we think it is just fair that we allow him to rest. We were very supportive and instrumental in convincing him to partner the late Prof. J.E.A. Mills, and when the time came for him to contest for President, we supported him and advised him to go for it…Now we have advised him not to make a comeback in 2020,” he said. A case for Mahama 2020? Historically, Ghanaian Presidents since 1992 have always served two terms. Perhaps counting on the fact that currently former President Mahama is the most marketed face in the NDC, Mr Adams said he would reject a decisio
Is this IDOT Mahama still talking. You led an NDC Government that borrowed massively only to turn around and CREATE, LOOT, and SHARE the Loan Amount; through Fake Guinea Fowl Projects that never saw light of the day, inflating contract price, Branding Buses at inflated prices, divert money meant to build hospitals for NDC Winning Research, Buying Toyota Land Cruiser for Chiefs, payment of cooked judgement debts with Woyoome the master ***barred word***. Dramani Mahama calling on Akufo-Addo government to apologize to Ghanaians for making a u-turn on its position on the state contracting loans to finance projects is a big joke. Mahama you should have borrowed the money to build cost effective projects and not to inflate cost of projects.
Ghanaians don't need any apology fro. our president, he us mot borrowing to create l000*00t and share like you did,he us borrowing to help Ghana to develop you are sick I your mind John mahama! Akufo Addo will borrow to construct roads for our people in Nzema area, our people in Sehwi, our people in Ashanti who are crying because of bad roads and our money ending in John mahama and his 40 thi*eves pockets.
sorry but regardless of how u see it, akuffo addo lied with this one
The constitution doesn't even allow him to contest again after receiving his ex-gratia. It allows only bad-to-back two 4-year terms as an incentive for good governance. When you're voted out of power after your first 4-year term, you're out. If he doubts, he must go and ask President Jimmy Carter in the US.
something must be wrong with this man? he needs medical examination.
Dear Ex President AKA ***barred word*** brigadier Mahama, please have you apologized to Ghanaian s for all the atrocities you meted out the us?
What at all is wrong with this man? There is absolutely nothing wrong with borrowing in as far as you use the funds wisely and prudently so you can create wealth and repay the loans back.Nana has never said anywhere that Ghana will NEVER borrow. What he is advocating [and earning the respect of the world] is that we should work towards the situation where our budget will not be supported by other people and when we need funds to build things we do not have to go round the world with bowl in hand inspite of all the resources God has endowed us with.iThat is what Ghana beyond aid is all about. Anyway I do not expect Mr Mahama to understand this concept or to buy into it. For him leadership is all about l00t1ng, inflating contract prices and looking the other way as friends and family l00t with abandon. I think we have to ban this guy from speaking in public.
Akoa wei paaaaaaa....heerrrr. But I can pardon him though. The man is finding it extremely difficult to say anything convincing and meaningful to Ghanaians so I agree with you @Akosua...)de no nkwasia keka saaaaaaaa.
Apologize because he did not use it on SADA, GYEDA and the Nkonfem but borrow to help all Ghanaians through free SHS, School feeding, NHIS etc. You just a JoooooKKKER.
