Dean of the School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana, Prof. Kofi Agyekum, popularly known as Opanyin Agyekum has asked the ruling government to halt a draft bill to regulate public universities in the country.
This bill according to government officials, will "provide the procedure for the establishment of Public Universities, principles of management of Public universities, the legal status of Public universities, the procedure for financing Public universities and administration and supervision of the activities of Public universities."
Some of the proposals in the Bill grant; a) the President power to dissolve the University Council; b) Allow the University Council to appoint a Chancellor and c) Allow unions to appoint only one representative on a rotational system to serve on the Council at each cycle.
Member of Parliament for North Tongu constituency, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa and other minority Members of Parliament, have also spoken against it.
Adding his voice to this during a panel discussion on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo', Opanyin Agyekum said the government cannot control universities like they do Senior High Schools and that to bring peace, the bill should be put on hold.

This is Ghana for us. We oppose everything and blame people for the laxity in the system. we have to start somewhere. Which University is not regulated and has complete autonomy. Then the Universities should pay themselves and provide infrastructure needed without recourse to government.Which father feeds a child and allows it to do what he or he likes. We want systems to work but want to oppose everything in the name of politics. We abide by rules and regulations abroad but frown upon ours during implementation. Ghana should really work please. Come to think of wanton sale of forms when the numbers for admission are known. A lot go on at the universities under the guise of autonomy.
The Npp government, in an attempt to retain power, is doing so many things wrong. Unfortunately, whatever they think could help them retain power is being resisted and exposed by the day. From free shs, to phony tax reduction, ROPAA implementation, nacob etc everything is working against them. Not forgetting the almighty national security gaffe at ayawaso and the Eye vigilante. God in his own wisdom is frustrating them one after the other.
