Former President John Dramani Mahama has stated emphatically that his government never made any attempt to sell the Komenda sugar factory.
This statement by the former president is contrary to claims by the Minister of Trade and Industry Alan Kyerematen that the erstwhile administration had wanted to sell the factory.
Speaking to the media after touring the Komenda sugar factory, Mr. Mahama said his government only sought to establish a Public Private Partnership agreement (PPP) to help the factory function properly.
“The whole project was being financed by the Indian EXIM, and so they released a first loan to build a factory and after the factory has been built, to test and commission it…
“The loan from the Indian EXIM is still available, so all the government needed to do was to take that money and implement the second phase of the project, and once they had done that, this factory will be running.
“But we accept that we do not have the expertise for sugar production and sugar growing so what we did was to put out an advert and we said any country or any company that has the expertise should come and partner with us under what we call a PPP.
“We were not selling the factory, it was a PPP arrangement. The intention was not to sell the factory… this is an investment the government made and we can get the expertise to make it work,” the former president stated.
He, therefore, urged government to go for the loan provided by the India EXIM and get the sugar factory running.

Even those companies who can construct a factory from start to finish, never build such factories and then go about looking for partners or buyers. They must first find the partnership or buyers, before they set out on a major endeavor like building a factory. You built a factory and told the nation sugar was flowing within months. Now we're being told there was supposed to be second phase? NDC wasted out time. In just two, it is as if Akuafo Addo has been president of Ghana for 20 years already. We beg the NDC to stay as far away from power as possible.
The Gov't must go for a loan, and the same lot would start calculating depth to GDP ratio. Lets maintain the focus by setting the priorities right. I wonder how the first set of loan is being paid without the factory even producing.
John Mahama and lies are bed fellows, especially when he takes his drink in the flask. He spent USD35m of Ghana's money to construct a factory so he could get the votes of KEEA in the 2016 elections, and that was all he thought about. How long would it have taken to work on getting out growers to plant the raw materials needed to make it complete? He ignored all warnings for political reasons, inflated the cost of the factory so he would just line his pockets with the booty. Of course he tried to sell the factory to his own surrogates so he would be hiding behind them. That's all he did in eight years of his handling the affairs of Ghana. He took advantage of Prez. Mills' condition and stooole so much funds to enrich himself and his family Nkrumah Interchange, Ridge Hospital, Kasoa Interchange, KIA Terminal 3, Tamale Airport, Kumasi Airport, All hospitals, Ameri Power, Karppower, buying of aircraft for which Prez. Mills wanted him investigated by Amidu, etc. All these major projects gave him the looted USDbillions which he is now flaunting and trying to be president again. Let him try and get beaten by 1.2millon votes this time round, and then the NDC stables will be wiped clean again so we can have a strong political arena again.
did you had a sugar plantation before you constructed the factory? you people don't think when you are using our money.
Government should not be in the business of building factories. That should be left to the private sector. Obtain more loans for government to complete what the former Prez calls 2nd phase of Komenda sugar factory is a wrong move. With such thinking, you should not bePrez of Ghana. We need leaders with vision.
