Former Ghanaian leader, John Dramani Mahama, has, on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, commended Ghanaian journalists for the role they play in deepening democracy in the country.
The theme for the 2019 World Press Freedom Day marked on Friday, 3 May 2019 is: “Media for Democracy, Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation”.
Commemorating the day on Facebook, Mr Mahama, who is seeking to lead Ghana again, said: “This year’s global theme for the World Press Freedom Day couldn’t have been more appropriate. The reaction of governments to the work of journalists and the impact of inaccurate news reports by journalists are issues that have dominated journalism over the last few years.
“I am in Addis Ababa today where UNESCO, the AU and the Ethiopian government have been hosting three days of activities discussing the relationship between the media and democracy.
“As has been asked by UNESCO, 'How can journalism rise above emotional content and fake news during an election? What should be done to counter speeches demeaning journalists? To what extent should electoral regulations be applied to the internet?'
“On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, I say ayekoo to all journalists and urge governments and security agencies to guarantee their safety in the discharge of their work.
“I also wish to encourage the Ghana Journalists Association, media men and women and bloggers to consider deeply and discuss how to remain relevant to society within the framework of the 2019 theme, ‘Media for Democracy, Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation’.”

mahama your record on journalist is worse after Rawlings, I think the least said about this man the better
MAHAMA MAKES MORE NEWS THAN GHANA'S SITTING PRESIDENT, NANA AKUFO "KRAMAN" ADDO. EVERYWHERE MAMAHA GOES, EVEN IN HIS PERONAL LOO, NPP FOLLOWERS WILL STILL HUNT FOR HIS NEWS. WHAT A GREAT LEADER EVER. JOHN MAHAMA, YOUR MAKER HAS MADE YOU WELL. PRAISE HIM (YOUR MAKER)EVERY DAY. NANA ADDO WISH HE COULD HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY BUT ALAS, THAT WAS NOT WHAT HIS MAKER INTENDED FOR HIM (NANA ADDO). SORRY!
WHAT AT ALL TO WE WANT AS GHANAIANS?. WHAT HAS THE FORMER PRESIDENT SAID TO WARRANT THESE INSULTING COMMENTS. SO, JOHN MAHAMA AS A FORMER PRESIDENT SHOULD NOT CONTRIBUTE TO ANYTHING IN THE COUNTRY EVEN IF IT IS A POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION. THE FORMER PRESIDENT DID NOT NARROW HIS COMMENT TO GHANA, BUT CALLING ON AFRICAN GOVTS TO WORK TO GUARANTEE THE SAFETY OF JOURNALISTS, SO WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS ADMONITION TO WARRANT THESE COMMENTS?. OR SHOULD I SAY THOSE THROWING OUT THESE COMMENTS SIMPLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND HIS WRITE UP AND NEED EDUCATION?.
CONCERT MAN
Did you know of that when you were the president or you have now become sensible to issues of journalists? Because you want power you are just talking any how but God will not let you to come and rule Ghana again. We saw how you mismanaged this country. You better advice yourself.
There are just no words to describe this character called Mahama. What at all does this man want? You have been president before, so if you are criticising the current president, at least, say that during your time you did this and that. Then we can compare. You don't ignore or even torture journalists when you are president, and then when you are out, you start saying the current person should guarantee their safety. What n0ne$en$3 is that! You think by trying to portray yourself as a caring person Ghanaians will vote you back, but your record is speaking louder than all these gimmicks.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE MOST USE LESS, ***barred word*** AND GREEDY MAN IN THE WORLD, COME TO GHANA. HE IS EX PRESIDENT JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA.
Mahama gave Stan Dogbe the license to make journalists insecure and Stan Dogbe went about delivering over and beyond what Mahama expected. It was brutal and it was unprecedented in the history of this country. Even out of office, Journalists have not felt safe where the NDC is concerned and we have witnessed some journalists at the receiving end of abuse at the hands of the NDC, with the potential of it actually being extended to the generality of Ghanaians in the most infamous and rather catastrophically dangerous NDC violent campaign of chaos and insecurity, as revealed by their National Chairman by one of their members, obviously terrified and alarmed by the kind of things that the NDC party was cooking up, at the highest level of their political leadership, in the absence of any clear well though through and intelligent policy alternatives to democratic governance and accountability that is transformative and progressive in meeting the socioeconomic development and growth aspirations of the peoples. What is evident is, a high level of responsibility on the part of everybody towards the security of everybody.
Ob TIO, so you can't keep your mouth shut but to comment on everything. Do you remember when your people rented a tro tro for journalists to Volta region and they crashed on their way back. Charlie, you're losing more voters with this hypocritical outbursts. I pity your advisers
Ah, ah, ah this man! Why should Ghana continue to pay him as former President? Populist & INCOMPETENT man!
