The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected a report by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) predicting victory for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2020 election in its latest report.
The report released on Friday, 13 September 2019, said the NPP and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will win the 2020 election because Ghanaians see them as better custodians of the economy.
“The next national elections are due in 2020. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to retain power, as the party is seen as a better custodian of the economy than the opposition National Democratic Congress,” it said.
It further explained: “The next presidential and parliamentary elections are due in November 2020. During the remainder of the term in office of the President Nana Akufo-Addo, the economic situation will generally improve. In the presidential election, Mr Akufo-Addo will face a challenge from John Mahama— Ghana’s president from 2012 to early 2017—who was elected leader of the opposition NDC in February 2019.
“The campaign for the 2016 election was dominated by the faltering economy, which many Ghanaians still associate with Mr Mahama. As a result, The Economist Intelligence Unit believes that it will be difficult for the NDC under Mr Mahama to portray itself as the better custodian of Ghana’s economy, especially as the country’s growth outlook is fairly strong. We therefore expect Mr Akufo-Addo and the NPP to secure re-election in 2020. However, if the NDC can present a coherent opposition and hold the NPP to account on unfulfilled campaign promises -particularly on job creation and industrialisation, where progress has been generally slow and success patchy—the election could be closely contested”.
Reacting to the report, the NDC, in a statement signed by Mr Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communication Officer, said: “The NDC welcomes this latest report, and states that as a political party, we respect the EIU as an internationally-reputed policy think thank which has been noted over the years for political and economic forecasting. However, we wish to state, that the EIU’s predictions are not sacrosanct or proven facts. Even though some of their predictions have, in times past, come to pass, they have gotten it wrong on many occasions. For instance, the EIU predicted the 2008 general elections for Candidate Nana Akufo-Addo, but Prof J.E.A Mills of the NDC won that election. They predicted the 2016 US election for Hillary Clinton, but Donald Trump won. The EIU’s recent prediction of the Nigerian election in favour of the PDP’s Atiku equally failed, and there are countless other examples.
“Having done an objective and dispassionate analysis of the latest EIU report on Ghana, the NDC comes to the irresistible conclusion, that the EIU has largely gotten their latest prediction of Ghana’s 2020 general election wrong.”
Below is the NDC full statement:
NDC REACTS TO LATEST EIU REPORT ON THE 2020 GENERAL ELECTION
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) wishes to react officially to the latest report of the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The Country Report on Ghana, generated on May 13th 2019, among other things touches on the political and economic outlook, our international relations and fiscal policy regime, and proceeds to make some claims on the 2020 General Election.
The NDC welcomes this latest report, and states that as a political party, we respect the EIU as an internationally-reputed policy think-thank which has been noted over the years for political and economic forecasting. However, we wish to state, that the EIU’s predictions are not sacrosanct or proven facts. Even though some of their predictions have in times past come to pass, they have gotten it wrong on many occasions. For instance, the EIU predicted the 2008 general elections for Candidate Nana Akufo-Addo, but Prof. J.E.A Mills of the NDC won that election. They predicted the 2016 US election for Hillary Clinton, but Donald Trump won. The EIU’s recent prediction of the Nigerian election in favour of the PDP’s Atiku equally failed, and there are countless other examples.
Having done an objective and dispassionate analysis of the latest EIU report on Ghana, the NDC comes to the irresistible conclusion, that the EIU has largely gotten their latest prediction of Ghana’s 2020 general election wrong.
KEY ISSUES IN THE REPORT
1. The EIU’s prediction on latest Economic Growth in Ghana is based on growth “driven predominantly by the Oil and Gas sector”. Whilst we have to state that this growth was largely projected to happen due to the huge investments in Ghana’s oil sector by the erstwhile Mahama administration, it is worth asking how many Ghanaians are in the oil sector, and how does growth in the Oil and Gas sector impact the lives of Ghanaians? Unlike some advanced jurisdictions, Ghana’s current economic growth which is largely oil-driven, does not reflect in the lives of Ghanaians.
The fact is that, the economic reality of Ghanaians continues to worsen under President Akufo-Addo. Over the last two (2) years, the living conditions of the vast majority of Ghanaians have deteriorated due to high and unbearable cost of living occasioned by steep increments in the price of fuel, hefty taxes, rising food and commodity prices among others. These, coupled with the free fall of the Ghana Cedi, continuous job losses and static incomes of workers continue to worsen the economic wellbeing of Ghanaians. These are the realities Ghanaians see and feel, and that is what will determine who they vote for in 2020. The NDC contends that the key issue for the Ghanaian voter in 2020, will be whether or not his or her living conditions have improved or deteriorated under the four-year reign of President Akufo-Addo, and not based on an oil-driven growth which they cannot see or feel.
2. The latest EIU prediction is based on the assumption that, it will be difficult for the NDC to market and portray its Presidential Candidate, H.E. John Dramani Mahama as the better custodian of Ghana’s economy.
This assumption is obviously false. The facts show that the record of John Mahama relative to the management of Ghana’s economy is far superior to that of our current handlers, and this fact is there for all to see. John Mahama’s unprecedented investments in capital projects which created thousands of sustainable jobs and improved the livelihood of Ghanaians, stand tangibly and visibly like a lighthouse. Posterity has judged John Mahama well, and discerning Ghanaians are yearning for his return. Through effective communication, this story will be told and we are very optimistic that Ghanaians will choose John Mahama over President Akufo-Addo in 2020.
3. It is instructive that, the latest EIU report notes the failed promises of the Akufo-Addo government, especially in relation to job creation and industrialization. They make the point that, the 2020 election will be a close contest if the NDC can capitalize on this fact. In other words, the EIU is saying that the NDC can win the 2020 election if we present ourselves as a better alternative and capitalize on the failed promises of the Akufo-Addo government.
Indeed, the NDC will continue to expose the failed promises and deceptions of government. President Akufo-Addo has flattered to deceived the Ghanaian people on all his major campaign promises such as One Village-One Dam, One Million Dollars per Constituency every year, One District-One Factory, construction of 350 Senior High Schools from scratch in his first 18 months in power, payment of contractors within first 100 days, promise to protect the public purse among others. As a matter of fact, one thing that stood out in the report as the only notable achievement of President Akufo-Addo is his oversized government of 110 ministers (now 123 ministers), who continue to dissipate the scarce resources of this country, whilst offering very few opportunities to the masses.
5. We further note, that there are several other important issues that the EIU report failed to consider. Key amongst them are the declining investments in capital projects despite huge unprecedented borrowings. The ever-festering culture of corruption and nepotism, as well as the alarming levels of insecurity, lawlessness and impunity we are witnessing under President Akufo-Addo were all not captured by the report. All these critical issues bother on the disregard for good governance by the Akufo-Addo government, for which the Ghanaian people will punish him.
It is the considered position of the NDC, that much as the latest report by the EIU appears to be a double-edged sword, the report remotely models the present reality in Ghana. The report failed to take into consideration the real issues that affect Ghanaians, thereby making their prognostication faulty to a large extent. We therefore submit, that the latest prediction by the EIU that it “expects Mr Akufo-Addo and the NPP to secure re-election in 2020” is bound to fail if not reviewed. The NPP’s ship is sinking fast, and nothing can save it. Akufo-Addo has failed Ghanaians and will be rejected in 2020.
Signed.

NPP has lost the one million votes already, so whoever said NPP will win 2020 elections is dreaming. That group should go to streets and see how people are suffering.Npp uses lies to win and no one would ***barred word*** again for that.
Even in 2024, NDC is not coming. They should wait for the next 40 years. They can go and ask Dr Asemfoforo. He said this before he died. They can also go ask ask Mr. Vincent Asiseh. He is also dead.Osofo Kyiriabosom also predicted this just after the 2016 elections
@ Nana Peter. Tell them
All of you can speak for the NPP but we those who are in pain can only speak with our thumb come 2020. we have lost our jobs only for NPP to fix their children, NPP never suported Ghanaian businesses bu collasped them, NPP never created the jobs they made noise about in 2016, NPP cannot pin point and infruastructures they have put with the idea of creating jobs, all the roads through out Ghana are in very bad state than they took over power on the 07/01/2017. we are yet to see one million dollar per constituency, we are also yet to see one district one factory, one village one dam. ALL THOSE WHO ARE FEEDING FROM NPP BIG MEN AND WOMEN CAN ALWAYS BE PRETENTENDING TO SAY THAT NPP ARE DOING WELL. WE DONT CHOP FREE SHS. CREAT JOBS AND PAY ME WELL AND I WILL BE A RESPONSIBLE PARENT. IF NDC DID SO WELL IN PUTING UP STRUCTURES AND WE VOTED THEM OUT JUST BECAUSE OF DOMSO WHICH THEY EVEN FIXED THEN NPP SHOULD BE GETTING READY TO GET OUT COME 2020. THE CORRUPTION, THEIVERY, NEPOTISIM, FAMILIY GOVERNMENT IS JUST WORSE. THE MOST CORRUP GOVERNMENT EVER IN THE HISTORY OF GHANA
@Sammy Gyamfi please find something better to do. Why does politicians of all colours waste their time on such triviality? They should rather take it in their stride and go to the grassroots. That is how they can win votes. It is interesting that when it elections are approaching, these politicians get scared and cannot go to the ground. Note that these pollsters are politicians or are paid by politicians do that whatever they do.
So myopic, NDC. You believe it when fake prophets predict you will in 2020. But you snob scientific research and analysis. No wonder, you have no message and keep beating about the ***barred word***. Funny.
AAAAAAA Samy paaa i belief that the economic growth chock by the N.D.C. were based on water and saliva. The oil and gas discovered by N.P.P. regime during former President Kuffuor era was to improve the economic growth, These are to build schools roads and hospitals and not to loot and share as it has happen during your time.the hospitals you are always claiming are all loans contracted by Kuffuor regime.
NDC shouldn't waste precious time to respond to this bogus predictions. In any case elections is over year away and you are making predictions now now factoring into what the Almighty God will decide and do from now on. Who knows, maybe nana addo may even die and the lying barwumia may take over. And vice versa. One year is a long time, so time must not be wasted on this.
COMFORTABLE LEAD. NDC CAN NEVER, NEVER, NEVER WIN 2020 ELECTIONS. THEY SHOULD FORGET AND CONCENTRATE ON 2024.
Do not worry. We know the NDC is always in a "Comfortable Lead'.
