It will Interest you to know that imported rice( after paying all the shipping and duties at the port) is still cheaper than our local rice. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a farmer and a huge advocate for consumption of made in Ghana products but the patriotic patience of Ghanaians will quickly run out if our local rice farmers don’t do anything about their pricing. Same as our local chicken and the imported one. Once it’s cheap, it’s the best. It might not be the fault of the farmers when pricing. The unit cost of producing a bag of rice depends on external factors(high interest rates, taxes, fuel costs etc) which is beyond their control. We must do more to support farmers across the country. Competitive pricing and branding are sine qua non to Ghanaians being patriotic but all hope is not lost. Ghana shall prosper. #Idey4u -

Fact checked: Wienco Aduanehene or coppa rice, both locally produced rice sell at Ghs 30 per 5 kg bag. Lele rice, millicent rice, prime choice rice etc, which are all imported brands sell above Ghs 40 per 5 kg. Some sell at Ghs 52, or even Ghs 60+. We should be serious in this country. Politicians included!
Please SIR, Should that not have been the first you learnt in 'Economics-101'? Those large scale operations abroad will always be cheaper, until the local producer is accorded the markets to allow them compete fairly. That is why Govts intervene to 'reset' this situation. Check the Agro industries in EU & US. The govt can increase the tax on imported rice, provide subsidies to local farmers, or both. Either has positive as well as negative effects. However, a more effective solution, is for the citizens to par-take in the consumption of locally produced rice. This is do-able. Vietnam used to import all their rice from the USA, that small country is now exporting a lot of the same. The local rice may have stones, sift them out & chow them down. There will be benefits in the future. Otherwise, eat yams, it tastes better anyway. "You cant have your cake & eat it too."
