Former president John Dramani Mahama has described government’s withdrawal of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) election bill as unnecessary.
The amendment, he believes would have given Ghanaians the opportunity to elect their own MMDCEs.
President Akufo Addo earlier this month called off the much anticipated December 17 referendum together with the amendment of article 243/1 from parliament. Mr. Akufo Addo cited lack of a durable national consensus for the withdrawals.
Speaking at a meeting between the Christian Council of Ghana and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), ex-president John Mahama raised concerns about government’s decision to the amendment of article 243/1 from parliament.
The said article gives sitting presidents the power to appoint MMDCEs but Mahama believes a more open approach where voters decide on who lead them in championing development is rather desired.
Though the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) had started advocating for a NO vote for the Dec 17 referendum, it did oppose the election of MMDCEs.
The party was worried about referendum because it believed it will lead to the needless NDC-NPP polarization of district assemblies and unit committees.
The NDC’s flagbearer, John Mahama also backs his party’s position suggesting that an amendment of Article 243(1) of the constitution was more necessary.

Let get this right for once. NDC is not against electing MMDCEs on neutral ground, but rather electing them on political grounds. The two approaches are not the same ! So there is no double standard here.
This mahama gay will never learn
This Kanazoe ford bribe man is confused..... Double tongue person. You were in power for 8 years... why did you and your corrupt NDC make plans to elect our DCEs? You and your party opposed the referendum and you are now shedding crocodile tears about the withdrawal of the bill by the president. This double salary and ford bribe taker is annoying..... you will never be president again... NEVER NEVER. Tafiakwaa
You sat and agreed with the president to carry out this MMDCEs Bill and stabbed in the back in the last minute, Shame on you.
THE HYPOCRISYYY AND INCONSISTENCY OF NDC FOR THE REFERENDUM AND AND AMENDMENT BILL CAN NOT BE EXPLAINED INTELLIGIBLY, EXCEPT TO ATTRIBUTE IT TO A CURSE ON THE PARTY.NOTHING IS COHERENT, NOR INTELIGIBLE. ALL HAVE HOPED THAT THE WITHDRAWAL WOULD HAVE KEPT THE SLEEPING DOG LYING BUT HAMAHA IS STILL TALKING

Which way now Oga Mahama, why are you so confused? Are you being haunted by your unprecedented electoral defeat in 2016 or what? We thank God that He rescued Ghana from such a character.
