Ghana’s second-largest opposition party, Ghana Union Movement (GUM), has warned President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to withdraw the controversial e-levy bill from parliament if he wants peace and harmony to reign in the country.
Founder and Leader of the party, Christian Kwabena Andrews, contends that what the Akufo-Addo-led government should be interested in doing is creating employment rather than taxing the populace.
“We shouldn’t accept this at all,” the head pastor of Life Assembly Worship Centre stressed.
“Give people work to do, employment, instead of taxing those who are poor already...I am entreating Nana Addo and his ministers, for peace and harmony to reign in this very country, he needs to come out and tell Ghanaians that the e-levy matter, he has removed it from Parliament.”
Osofo Kyiri Abosom, as he is popularly known, was addressing journalists in Accra on Tuesday, December 28 when he made this observation.
‘Bunch of liars’
He expressed disappointment in the current administration, calling all members “a bunch of liars”.
“We are not a type to come out with lies.
“Now, NPP has lied to us from the beginning of their campaign throughout these four years that they have spent with us and we voted [for] them again because they keep on lying.
“I call them a bunch of liars. From President to the Vice [President] to Ministers of this very country, they are not treating us fairly at all.”
He hinted at contesting the 2024 elections to continue his resolve to break the duopoly of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He was optimistic about winning the elections given his performance in the last polls, which were his first.
The introduction of the Bill, popularly known as e-levy, has been met with chaos in Parliament as members of the two major parties have been engaged in fisticuffs until adjournment of consideration to Tuesday, January 18, 2022.

So will any government dare to introduce taxes in this country in the future if this is withdrawn? What type of precedence is this?
Ghana is cheap country for GUM to have gust to speak on national development . Even him charges consultation fees at GHC 1,000 without pay any tax and still want his road to be fixed . Those hiding under guise of God and deceive Ghanaians will also spared in the event of the second coming of Christ Azzaa Guys in the Country. You have been taken money from ordinary Ghanaians without sweating for it .
Who told you that those wanting the e-levy scrapped are doing so in good faith and that its avoidance will bring harmony among the parties? The e-levy is an innovative way to generate all-inclusive revenue if the bottlenecks are well gauged. Other things being equal, in our kind of economy, it will indeed go a long way towards increasing the tax net, considering the huge amount of money in circulation as captured by the benefits of digitalization. The Ghana Beyond Aid mantra should inspire us to think beyond the box. Then, we just can't keep on doing the same thing since our independence and expect different results that do not make us dependent. The policy guideline to get there is Ghana Beyond Aid. We must be fortunate and proud of our President, Akufo-Addo, for his boldness and leadership skills. The naysayers who seek no consensus are doing so for their own self-seeking interests. The finance ministry, among others, is very competent. Indeed, the flagship projects like 1D1F, planting for food, and FHS, only to mention a few, of the Akufo-Addo administration, spell out the intent of self-esteem in basic things that make us independent. Don't mind those dishonest intellectuals who desist from constructive criticism. I plead with Ghanaians to have patience with the NPP-administration, for the benefits of most of the flagship projects take time to mature.
