Former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Ejisu Juaben Municipality, Afrifa Yamoah Ponkoh, has taken a swipe at President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo.
According to him God does not need his Cathedral.
President Akufo-Addo cut the sod for the construction of the national cathedral on March 6, 2017, as part of events that marked Ghana’s 60th-anniversary celebration.
The government has also provided 14-acres of public land for the project, while the Christian community and individuals are to fund the construction.
Though reception towards the cathedral from Ghanaians has been mixed, it has been well received by various leaders in the Christian community.
Recently, Government granted the release of GH¢25 million to the National Cathedral Secretariat as additional seed money for the construction of the National Cathedral.
A letter, signed by the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, to the Controller and Accountant’s General, directed that the money be credited to Ribade Limited, for part payment of outstanding claims.
In a release signed by the Finance Minister Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta it stated that, "the Authority is hereby granted to you to release the sum [of] GH¢25, 000,000.00 as additional seed money to the National Cathedral Secretariat for the construction of the National Cathedral for part payment of outstanding claims from RIBADE Limited”.
Speaking on Okay FM's 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, Mr. Afrifa Yamoah Ponkoh chastised the AkufoAddo government for using the tax payers money to finance a project that does not immediately benefit the people of Ghana.
According to him, the President has blatantly refused to assist the ordinary Ghanaian and focusing on things that does not matter now.
"Where did God tell you that he needs a Cathedral," he rhetorically asked.
"Why will God need a cathedral when his people are suffering. You are using monies that can be used to alleviate the hardships Ghanaians are going through to put up a project that is not immediately needed for anything except for the President's and political party's interest.
" . . God never said that . . . God will never say that, Kwame that is the gospel truth . . . God does not need that," he said, adding that, "you don't rob the people, you don't deceive the people, you don't betray the people and you don't maim the people, then after that you say you're using the proceeds to build a Cathedral for the people".
He said President Akufo-Addo is doing whatever he wants.
"I am tempted to believe that there is no man in Ghana now . . . Ghanaians are suffering . . . after Rawlings there is no man in Ghana again".

This is typical NDC, the nation wreckers, when President Kufuor was building the seat of government , the Jubilee House they said they will use it as a poultry farm because Ghanaians are suffering and we do not need that edifice. They are the first occupants. This is what we are seeing now.
Typical of peace FM to remove ndc comments. The least said of this cathedral, the better. Service personnel, NABcO, school feeding, meteorological services, teachers, nurses, etc etc, this government owes them all after sooo much borrowed with nothing, absolutely nothing to show. We await 2024 patiently and this time, the army will break nothing. The massacre in techiman will not deter anyone. Ndc won the last election and will only need to keep it's eyes on the vigilantes in the army.
Please do you know God?I advice you to repent.NDC will not save your soul.
Populist NDC talk! They did the same propaganda when Fmr. President Kuffour was building the Jubilee House. I am waiting to buy some of the chicken they proposed to use that edifice for. SHAMEFUL PARTY! They don’t have anything good for Ghana, except CREATE LOOT & SHARE!
Reading through the comments made here, you can easily sort out those who are literately, mentally weak and can hardly make any sense of what they seek to say except insults. Unfortunately, they predominantly belong to a party called NDC, which is literally a group devoid of logical argumentation. You hardly know what they want, let alone be able to fathom out what they can do better except insult and doom everything.
@ Kojo you are the bigger ***barred word***, the fact that the world is experiencing economic difficulties does not mean governments should not do projects. Washington Cathedral was built by the US government with public funds, but here is the case the government has given the seed money and clergies are soliciting for funds to build it. Kojo in your own family I do not think your father has been able to provide every need your family want but he pays tithes or sakat. The revenue this cathedral will generate is enormous. Visit St Peter's Cathedral and see how much it costs.
ALL YOU ***barred word*** DEFENDING THIS ***barred word*** PROJECT THAT REALLY SERVES NO TANGIBLE INTEREST OF THE GHANAIAN PEOPLE BUT A FEW WE RUN A SCHOOL SHIFT SYSTEM BECAUSE OF INADEQUATE AND POOR INFRASTRUCTURE, MISERABLE STANDARD OF LIVING, BAD HEALTH SYSTEM AND A STARVING POPULATION BUT THE FOOOLISH MAN WILL CHOOSE TO BUILD A ***barred word*** CATHEDRAL JUST FOR HIS SELFISH AMBITION WHEN WILL WE LEARN SENSE? WILL THE ADVANCED COUNTRIES ARE TURING CHURCHES TO FACTORIES WE ARE RATHER WASTING RESOURCES ON A STUUUUUPID CATHEDRAL OVER THE PROPLES WELL BEING...EVEN GOD KNOWS YOU ARE JUST STUUUPID WHY BIBINII...GOD SAVE US
Please, stop making those uncivil defamatory comments, either out of innocence or incompetence, about our visionary President, Akufo-Addo. For he does not deserve it in any way, beyond any political malice imagined. It is rather unfortunate that the defamation is mainly coming from the NDC, the opposition party, particularly Ablakwa and his cohorts, who seem to be very diabolic about the good intensions of the President. There is nowhere in the world where the leaders have built cathedrals and monuments only in times of economic prosperity, but today these monuments are generating income for the common good. One would argue that priorities must be set right. But I believe that there are priorities that are set to generate immediate benefits and those for future benefits that are equally important. And it takes good leadership to be able to make the correct dose. I believe you will agree with me that the Akufo-Addo administration is not doing badly at all in terms of embarking on developmental and social interventional projects. The critiques of the national cathedral seem to ignore one important aspect: that he is employing the talent of a world-class Ghanaian architect to achieve that feat. Opposition politics should not be ludicrously reduced to baseless political polemics and seeing evil in everything. As Ablakwa and some NDC cohorts are attempting to do.
I wonder why people are refusing see the spiritual, physical, financial, emotional etc. benefits of the National Cathedral? Have you guys thought of the direct and indirect employment, tourism and other benefits? God deserves better.
Has the president robbed you ?.When you became an MCE for Ejisu Juaben for just four years, you bought eight plots of land and built four storey buildings on them. I will lead some journalist to come and film them, put it on ***barred word***. Greedy bastard.
