The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Honourable Samuel Atta Akyea, has called for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to unite behind Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections.
Atta Akyea said Bawumia’s competence is unmatched, describing it as ‘over the top’ and said he is uniquely qualified to deliver Ghana from any economic woes.
Atta Akya made his submission during an appearance on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana programme on Tuesday, January 3rd 2022.
“I am of the humble view that Dr. Bawumia will be the first president who is an economist and therefore nobody is going to say that the president didn’t understand the economy that is why the economy is a mess.
“Now, he is in the saddle…now you are president, deliver us from the economic mess. Who understands the economy better than the one who is an economist himself? So, in terms of competence, I am persuaded that he has it and he is over the top,” he told host Paul Adom-Otchere.
Atta Akyea said the NPP must prioritise competence above all in choosing a running mate and not default to tribal or religious considerations.
The legislator said the NPP should simply unify behind Dr Bawumia rather than go through a divisive primary and called for Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyeremanten to be named as Bawumia’s running mate to satisfy all factions.
The NPP is expected to elect a flagbearer for the 2024 elections later this year.
A slew of top party officials are expected to contest including the Agric Minister, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong and former party General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.
The race is widely expected to be a two-horse race between Dr Bawumia – who has won the hearts and minds of the party faithful with his economic genius and digital agenda – and Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten who would be coming for his due after being denied the flagbearer position by Nana Akufo-Addo in 2008.

Bawumia the competent indeed.
I believe Alan is too intelligent to appreciate the dynamics of personal interest in light of surrogates who may lose their importance and interest if Allan teams up with Bawumia. That notwithstanding, Alan's interest in serving his country as president should not be restricted to a particular time when his chances of winning are not favorable, and he therefore has to strategize to get there. Thus, teaming up with Bawumia at this particular time is very critical. And this will be my candid advice. The principle of democracy upholds, respects, and is guided by keen and fair competition; hence, strategizing is very key. These are my words in support of Alan's collaboration with Bawumia.
If that is NPP's most competent candidate then that is sad, he had the chance as Vice President head of economic management team and he failed why should any sensible person defend this, our situation was caused by mismanagement more than world crisis, Ukraine war or covid, if he is wise he wouldn't stand but his greed is getting similar to Mahama. Don't know of Alan's Capabilities but with these crop of candidates from NPP and NDC lets pray God give them more wisdom to change their minds because they are all "Stealers"
Folks, in Ghana today any development chalked through digitization journey is by (BMW) The truth is that over the years nobody was able to do what has been done by Dr Bawumia . Now , you can sit at your comfort homes and withdraw money from your bank accounts without necessarily visiting the banking hall . what a great Dr Bawumia handy works . So now nobody can tell me that Dr Bawumia is not competent to lead NPP . Dr Bawumia is the surest bet for the NPP breaking the 8 agenda without him then NPP should forget forming the next Government. TRUST ME
NPP is at crossroads. NDC has no problem because they do not have any outstanding candidates to challenge Mahatma. The story of NPP is different. Bawunia, the VP is intelligent and outspoken he is clear in the current political policies. He is experienced in government for 8trs. Ken is no ***barred word*** person needed for new Africa. He is a successful businessman who understands the dynamics of doing business. Alan is a noble human person and highly industrialist and trade manager. He is a gifted diplomat and well vexed in negotiations, which is critically essential in contemporary governance. He has the ability to bring on board the right people irrespective of their political background to get the maximum results to develop the nation. Bawumia is great but he might need to rest. Alan can give him a good rest now for him to refresh himself. The future is still wide open for him. Ken is a great man but he contains in himself the character of both Donald Trump and Paul Kagame.. Ghanaians are not sure which of the two Ken would reflect as president. He is a symbol of "kyakya" a game of risk.. The choice is for Ghanaians but they must pray to God for the right choice.
Akyem Maafia agenda
111DIO00T HAS HE DELIVERED US FROM ECONOMIC WOES WITH YOUR AKYEM BROTHER? ATTA KYEW LET ME TELL YOU BAWUMIA CAN NEVER AND WILL NEVER BE PRESIDENT IF HE IS SEEN TO BE BACKED BY AKYEM MAFIAS
Well said, that's your opinion. But in all these if the ordinary NPP supporter is not happy like we are currently seeing due to neglect by some appointees full of empty pride and seeing their positions as gold mines grabbing left right and center bet me the party's performance in 2024 will be a disaster. The presidential primaries is only the group stage, the knockout stage is the general elections where every registered voter is a delegate. The decision as whether to vote or not or who to vote for lies with the individual. NPP is not a religion. John Mahama lost the 2016 elections not because of lack of funds, not because he didn't have power or influence. He lost because he failed to secure enough human beings to cross the 50% +1 mark. NPP appointees of today will get to know human beings are more important than money, power and influence when counting of ballots starts after 5:00pm on 7 December, 2024. It's like the party failed to learn any lessons from the 2020 elections. If your MP's dropped from 169 in 2016 when you had nothing to 137 when you were in power and you still see this as normal, oyiwaa. If free SHS, free water, free electricity, 6 new regions , new voters register where alleged ghost names were all taken off and yet still presidential percentage of your presidential candidate dropped from 53% in 2016 to 51% in 2020 and you think that's fine, oyiwaa. You claim the old voters register was bloated with foreigners, you beat the sitting president by close to one million votes with the foreigner infested register, now in power you asked for a new voters register to be compiled and what happened, if all these are very normal with the NPP, fine . We are watching
***barred word*** talk what do you mean by impatient Alan
