A Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu is insisting that former President John Dramani Mahama return all ex-gratia paid to him if indeed he wants to scrap the retirement benefits as promised.
Speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show, 'Ghana Montie', lawyer Martin Kpebu said Mr Mahama’s believability will be in doubt if he refuses to return what he has benefited from and now proposing to scrap it if he becomes President again.
“Until he returns all his ex-gratia, he is not credible to be President again,” he told host Kwesi Aboagye.
Lawyer Kpebu’s comment comes after the former President said he is not in the position now to return the retirement benefits he has received because he has no other source of income as a ‘pensioner’.
“I have spent the money already and now I am a Pensioner, where am I going to get that money to pay back? I am unemployed but they say bring yours to show you have good faith, I have no source of income, and you say I shouldn’t work.
“They say the President should not hold the office of profits so you gave it to me, I spent it then you come and say I should refund it, where am I going to refund it from?" Mr Mahama lamented.
But Lawyer Kpebu said “He [Mr Mahama] can use his campaign donations money to pay back some of his ex-gratia. Until then, he is not credible.”

THIS SHOWS OUR BELOVED GHANA LACKS REAL PATRIOTIC AND COMPETENT LEADERS BOTH NDC AND NPP ARE NOTHING BUT ***barred word*** PARASITES THAT HAVE NOTHING GOOD FOR MOTHER GHANA 66YEARS AND WE STILL WALLOWING IN POVERTY AND MEDIOCRITY
I do not understand why the NDC is looking past Dr. Dufuor and considering Mahama to lead the party into the 2024 elections. It is worrying and disappointing to hear Mahama make some populist statements unbecoming of a former president. Those hailing him are sycophants who will do anything for their selfish or parochial interests. Given Mahama's intellectual deficit, I would rather gather my wits and seek the assistance and advice of an expert before making such a naked political statement as abolishing the ex gratia, despite its entrenched position in our constitution.
In fact until this issue came up, I thought Mr. Mahama had changed and was mature to govern this country again...but no! First, he should not have responded to calls on him to refund his ex-Gratia after he made the promise to cancel it if he gets the chance. Kuffour and even Nana do would not mind you on some of these issues at all because they understand politics. Secondly, I hear he made a similar promise in 2015 but when the time came he took the "doe". Mr Mahama is a talkative or has become one of late. He responds to everything which is not good for his posture as a formal president. Chief please keep mute small wai.
NPP 1diots crying over Mahama. He's coming whether u cry blood or urine,
If you are a pensioner then you are not fit to be elected as president again because pensioners don't work per your own logic. I wonder, in NDC are there no people or persons who are more than qualified and competent than JDM? or is it because of his money (Wealth he amassed through perceived corrupt means) that they are still rooting for him? Be wise NDC. He is not yet the president and he has started calling Ghanaians who are raising genuine concern about his pronouncement on ex-gratia silly? My fellow Ghanaians be wise. This man is a wolf in sheep's cloth. One thing Ghanaians should not forget is, because he is immune to criminality and has only 4 years to end his lifetime presidency, if e make a mistake a vote for him he will create, loot and go with our money after his term of office ends. He will also make room for those babies with sharp teeth3 to enrich themselves and moreover, bequeath majority part of our resources to his brother just like what he did when he perfectly knows he has been voted out of office in 2016
Do we call former presidents pensioners (in terms of remuneration) whilst they retire on their full salaries? This is unfair, to say the least.
ah so such thing was ruling Ghana, Jesus Christ!!! he is not even ashamed to be saying these things. Never again should we discerning Ghanaians allow such an infantile caricature any where near the presidency, this man seems not to be growing or he is suffering from some mental problem
Mahama is not credible, his quest to come to power is to reclaim the Vice Presidents building he requested for and hand over the Nhinahin Bauxite deposit to his brother. Such a con man. The promise will later look like the Okada Promise, they will run away from it now.
It's funny. Former president Mahama is telling us he has no source of income so he can't refund what he has spent so far in terms of ex gratia. Lol
