William Akuka, a student of Prempeh College came first, finishing in a time of 1 hour 11:26: minutes to beat David Zigah of the Immigration Service, Accra, who clocked 1 hour 35:82 seconds, in the Kumasi Mini Marathon event.
Under the theme, �Run for Health and Fun�, the Kumasi Mini Marathon event, sponsored by BonAqua of Coca Cola, came off in Kumasi on September 19, 2009. The event, organized by the Executive Events Ventures, attracted several participants mainly from the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo regions.
There were also runners from the Greater Accra region including the current Milo Marathon champion, Mr Zigah. The 22 kilometer race started from the Kumasi Polytechnic campus and then through Anloga Junction, Airport Roundabout, Suame Roundabout and other areas before ending at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium Heroes Park.
The ladies event was won by Eunice Nti Agyemang also of Kumasi who made an impressive time. Sixteen-year-old Noah Gyamfi came first in the minors division whilst the second place went to Kwabena Boakye.
Certificates and prizes were presented by the representative of the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Donkor, the Deputy Regional Economic Planning Officer, the Vice Rector of the Kumasi Polytechnic, Eric Brobbey and a representative of the Coca Cola Bottling Company of Ghana.
Speaking on behalf of the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Donkor said the marathon race was good for people as it lessens the risk of people contracting heart diseases. �Body exercise is more important than taking drugs as it does not have any side effect if done carefully and regularly.�
