Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, who is also the Deputy Majority Leader, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has debunked reports that the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in March sponsored her for an Executive Programme on Women and Leadership Training programme at Harvard.
According to media reports which surfaced in the wake of demands by the NHIA for increases in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) levies, the NPP MP requested $8,500 for tuition as well as funds to cover her tickets and accommodation.
She was supposed to attend the training as chairperson of the Women’s Caucus of Parliament.
“As the Chairperson of the Women Caucus in Parliament, this program would enlighten and enhance my knowledge in leadership and governance,” She appealed in the request letter.
The Executive Programme on Women and Leadership at Havard Kennedy School was scheduled to have taken place from Sunday, April 29 to Friday, May 4.
But in a statement rebutting the reports, Ms Safo, who is also the Minister of State in charge of Procurement, said even though she made a request for the money, her letter was subsequently withdrawn due to Parliament's decision to 'foot the entire cost of the training'.
She further added that “there are records to show that she did not receive any money from the NHIA after Parliament agreed to sponsor the educational programme.”
"Yes, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo made the said request for sponsorship to the NHIA in a letter dated March 16, 2018. The request was subsequently withdrawn by a letter dated 21st May, 2018 due to Parliaments decision to foot the entire cost of the training which includes the cost of her tickets and the accommodation".
The Dome-Kwabenya MP attached a response to her withdrawal letter from the NHIA dated July 5, 2018, as proof that the authority did not make any payment to her.
"There are records to show that she did not receive any money from the NHIA after Parliament agreed to sponsor the educational program. It must therefore be stated that Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo did not receive any money from NHIA nor did she authorize any person to do so," the statement added.

What has that training got to do with Health or Insurance. This is lack of good decisioning. Because the training is held at Harvard Univ. in Amerika, it is automatically good? Must you attend? I would have recommended a program to identify and nib all forms of corruption in the bud. That is the bane of the state.
Nana Addo and his appointees raise the bar of super incompetence each day!!Nana Addo is just doing "Ashubri Ashubri" and he does not know what is actually going on.He does not have the full picture of what his government is doing but busy attending functions and responding to "his excellency"!!
The fact is that Adoa Sarfos request to NHIA was childish, what has health insurance got to do with parliamentarians travels,as minister of procurement, is she saying the ministry of procurement has no budget?,Why didn't she apply to the ministry of women and gender since the so called 3 day course is about women empowerment,Akuffo Addo should learn from Kufuor who made sure all his substantive ministers were experienced people with lots of experience, the likes of Adjoa Sarfo should be dep. ministers. But for lack of experience, how can a lawyer make such a p-one-nic mistake, no wonder its all about chew, pour and pass in our schools these days
Those who hide under anonymity and make claims about people should desist from doing that. How can you proof that Fiifi Kwetey studied with government money. Adjoa Safo's case has been proven and without prove from anyone in Fiifi Kwetey's case I will say that Adjoa Safo has not disappointed at all in her childishness and amateurish way of being in parliament.
I have always said that Nana Addo's appointees are going to cause problems for him because of bad decisions. In this particular case, what informed her to make the request to NHIA when the training is related to parliamentary work? Such bad judgements are repeated everyday. No lessons learned from the last government. Finally, is our education helping us at all? Lawyers, doctors, professors, engineers, scientists, planners, etc. with big certificates yet without good judgement instincts. No intuition.
Please stop justifying the corrupt practices of these corrupt gov't officials, the fact that Fiifi Kwetey did something similar doesn't make it morally right. Corrupt intent and practices should be condemned regardless. Drawing a moral equivalence by logically compare one corrupt practice against the other, defeat the high moral standard our politicians ought to set for themselves. We, the people should hold them to such standard. May God bless our Homeland Ghana
you see how some people who call themselves rich show a sence of entitlement to our national assets and income??
Mahama built the first phase of a 650 bed hospital for a quarter of a billion dollars at Legon. Fiifi Kwetey was schooling in France, flying in and out when he was a minister Take your NDC childishness somewhere else
The corruption in their blood will expose them every day... Since Nana Addo took over the reigns of this country, no week passes without a chop chop deal... Minister for procurement? Are we joking??? 110 Ministers and 998 staffers, how can the country do well
You, NDC & NPP politicians think we the citizens are stupi.d? You always want to find crafty ways to milk the state coffers. Why should that vain 2-week certificate from Harvard be the responsibility of the NHIA or Parliament for that matter? Is it by force to go to Harvard? You should bow your head in shame. Your father or loud mouth baby daddy couldn't foot that bill? And you have the audacity to request for money from the NHIA while ordinary people are dying at the hospitals for lack of facilities. How many mattresses can that $8500 buy for a clinic in your village. N.kwasiasem akwa. That minister of procurement position is meaningless and should be scrapped. The Auditor General should audit all the sponsorship money these state companies pay because that is where the loot and share begins. God is watching.
