NPP Member of Parliament [MP] for the Manhyia North constituency in the Ashanti Region, Collins Owusu Amankwah has expressed his disappointment in authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology [KNUST] and the university council for watching an unexpected violent demonstration unfold in the school on Monday.
“Even though I don’t side with the students for destroying school properties, the university council should be blamed, especially the Vice-Chancellor of the school for his inconsistent decisions as far as the school is concerned,” he stated.
He believes the Vice-Chancellor’s attitude and decisions taken in recent times concerning the school was a major part of the destruction.
He was speaking on UTV’s ‘Adekye Nsroma’ programme, Tuesday.
The Member of Parliament stressed that all the three main public universities in the country (University of Ghana, Legon, KNUST and UCC) have some traditions that make them unique among the others, therefore “there is no need for any authority in position to target changing those traditions, which have nothing to do with academics”.
“Personally I am in pains because this violence was avoidable, this is because when the students started registering their grievances, they proposed a negotiation term which was not taken into consideration, and as the law says justice delayed is a justice denied,” he said.
He added that “it will serve the Vice-Chancellor much good should he resign from his post as the students demand because his continuous stay will cause more harm and his life will also be at stake.”
According to him, the NPP are not attempting to sack the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST as some members of the National Democratic Congress [NDC] are speculating, but “all we are saying is the best thing should be done”.

IT SAD THAT GHANAIANS ARE AFRAID TO CONDEMN THIS PRIMITIVEEEEE AND BARBARICCCC ACT OF KNUST STUDENTS. HISTORY TESTIFIES THAT DEMONSTRATORS WITH GENUINE CONCERNS DO NOT RESULT TO BRUTEEEE AND VIOLENCE TO ADDRESS THEIR GRIEVANCES. YES, PEEOPLE IN DEMOCRATIC DISPENSATION EMBARK ON DEMONSTRATION BUT NOT EXPECTED TO BECOME SENSEELEESSSS AND VIOLENT LIKE KNUST STUDENT. SRC OF KNUST IS A FAILED LEADERSHIP AND MUST BE PUNISHED FOR SUCH UNNECESSARY DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY. I AM EXPECTING NUGS TO COME OUT MATURES AND TO CONDEMN SUCH UNCIVILISEEDD BEHAVIOUR AND NOT TO CONDONE IT. WHAT LEGACY ARE WE LEAVING TO THE YOUNGER GENERATION. THE BEHAVIOUR OF KNUST STUDENT IS SO BAD THAT IT DOES NOT BEFIT SECONDARY OR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT. I EXPECT CIVIL SOCIETY, RELIGIOUS BODIES, AND PROFESSIONAL BODIES TO CONDEMN THIS UNRULYYYY BEHAVIOUR OF KNUST STUDENT IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS IMMEDIATELY. MANY OF KNUST STUDENT HAD JOIN THE DEMONSTRATION BUT HAD NOT DESIRED TO BE DESTRUCTIVE AND SENSELESSS. I EXPECT THE RIGHTTTT MINDED STUDENT TO HELP ANY INVESTIGATION BODY TO BE SET UP TO FISH OUT THE PERPERTRATORS OF THE VIOLENCE TO BE PUNISHED. THE CRIME COMMITTED FOR DESTROYING PROPERTIES MUST BE PAID FOR BY THE STUDENT. IT IS SHAMEFUL TO GHANA FOR PRODUCING SUCH INDISCIPLINE BUNCH OF PEOPLE FOR THE FUTURE GENERATION. UNIVERSITY STUDENTS SHOULD BECOME THINKERS AND CREATIVE TO SOLVE PROBLEMS AND NOT BRUTEE. ALL SHOULD CONDEMN THIS SHAMEFUL ACTION.
Sir, i agree with your opinion on this issue. Sir, i know you are a member of the security committee of parliament i stand to be corrected on that but i am surprised with all resources and information available to you in your capacity, you were equally not proactive to prevent this incident. these are not only students and youth but citizens of Ghana. Whiles some of us will agree with you on this issue, some of us will equally ask you to be proactive on national security issues as a member of parliament especially from Ashanti region. Thank you
When such politicians jump into issues this way, then you know it is a mess. They get the title "honorable" for nothing so they have no respect for anyone. If they were asked to publish one article to qualify as MPs, you'll see how many of them will drop out. Use**less bunch of legislators.
MR. MP YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING SO KEEP QUIET. WE THE STAFF SUPPORTTHE VC 100% PERIOD.
he VC is trying to stampede Ghana to allow him to engage in deals for his benefit, arising from the incidental increase in prospective students for university placement, and to his mind and thinking, should have commensurate accommodation facilities. He has not averted his mind to technology and how e-learning has the potential to create a great balance but is concerned with what he and faceless elements stand to benefit from such construction projects, hence his actions which has backfired and now must pay. Get rid of the briggggggaaaannnnnd VC.
Ahaa preparing to use the Vice Chancellor as a scape goat because that has been the plan all along. My dear Mp you talk like an ordinary serial caller. You and your colleagues should have set in motion mechanisms to get to the bottom of the matter and then get the VC punished if he is culpable. Instead we have infantile effusions from people called leaders. God save this country
The VC Must Go Period!!!!
