The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is asking government to immediately employ some over 500 medical officers who have completed their housemanship and have been left unemployed by government.
According to the President, Dr. Frank Ankobeah, the association takes to concern the plight of Ghanaians as there is a poor ration in terms of doctor to patient ratio in the country.
Speaking on Okay FM's 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, he explained that they could not understand why those medical officers have not been employed.
Ghana still suffers from the poor doctor-patient ratio, some trained doctors and dentists are wasting away at home.
"The current ratio between a doctor and patient is 1:8000 per Region and 1:30,000 per patient which affects the health care delivery in country," he added.
"The GMA is gravely concerned about the creeping incident of unemployment of medical doctors and dentists in the country in spite of the fact that Ghana still suffers from abysmal doctor to patient ratio."
According to the Ghana Medical Association, the Ministry of Health has failed to work on the issue, citing lack of financial clearance as a hindrance.
But Dr. Frank Ankobeah says the explanation by the government is unacceptable.
"The GMA takes very serious view of this development and would like to state that the citing of lack of financial clearance as the reason for non-posting of medical doctors and dentists by the Ministry of Health is not acceptable and the denial of healthcare to the Ghanaian.
"We are appealing to the government to immediately employ these officers," he added.
However, Director General of the Ghana health service, Dr. Nsiah Asare says government is putting in measures to have the doctors employed.
He said on Okay FM's 'Ade Akye Abia' programme that latest by next year, all the Doctors will be employed.

This tells us the grave of the problems Ghana has been through over the years. How can doctors and other health practitioners complete school for more than 5 years and still be at home unemployed? When Dr Bawumia warned the NDC and Mahama not to go to IMF, they didn't listen. This is the result of IMF conditionalities, they place embargo on public sector employment to streamline govt expenditure. This in turn affects the people just as its been reported here. Happy the NPP are taking Ghana out of the IMF so we can have an open economy and employ more people. If we allow the NDC in again, Ghana keep going backwards. VOTE NPP and NANA ADDO for all the changes we need !!!
NS if you say "EVEN DOCTORS and DENTISTS" what do you mean? Are they better or more important the others. You are the people who make them think superior. Let address the issue holistically and stop these mediocre thinking and low self esteem. Will these doctors keep quite if they are employed and their salaries are not paid for just one month due to non-clearance? Is it not the same for every sector employee to get financial clearance before employment. this is where I agree with the concept of DG of Ghana Health Service to have financial clearance of place of vacancy than blanket sweeping clearance for all. Let be serious as a nation and discipline in terms of respecting structures.
Yes ooo, the economy is booming well. Well done. NPP governnment
I'M COMING DOWN TO GHANA TO START A COMMOTION IF THESE UNEMPLOYED DOCTORS ARE SIDELINED TO FUND THE CONSTRUCTION OF A UNIMPORTANT AND MISPLACED NATIONAL CATHEDRAL. LET'S GET SERIOUS!!!
IS THIS TRUE THAT UNEMPLOYED DOCTORS ARE STAYING AT HOME WHILE IT'S REPORTED THAT THERE IS A RATIO OF ONE DOCTOR TO ABOUT 30,000 PEOPLE IN SOME REGIONS IN GHANA? WHAT ARE OUR PRIORITIES? WE FIND STAGGERING AMOUNTS OF MONEY TO IMPORT LUXURY CARS TO BE USED BY POLITICIANS AND SOME PROMINENT CITIZENS WHILE WE DRAG OUR FEET TO DO THE RIGHT THING LIKE THIS! GHANA, LET'S PUT ON OUR THINKING CAPS AND EXORCISE OUR SELF-GROWN DEMONS IMMEDIATELY!!!
Even Doctors and Dentists are unemployed, what a shitjo.le country indeed, ah ah.
