Seasoned journalist, Kweku Baako Jnr. has slammed the decision by government to amend some public holidays in the country.
Government has proposed a new bill before Parliament to amend the Public Holidays Act.
The new bill which was laid by the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, on Thursday, December 13 seeks to make January 7 Constitution Day and August 4, Founders' Day.
The government is also proposing to scrap the Republic holiday on July 1 and AU holiday on May 25 whereas the Founder's Day on September 21 will no more be observed as Founder's Day but only as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.
The proposal is ensure that AU and Republic Days are only observed as commemorative days.
But according to Kweku Baako, government's proposal for July 1st to be observed as commemorative day, makes "no sense" and defeats the relevance and purpose of the day.
He explained that July 1st marks a landmark in Ghana's history and wondered why the government would make any attempt to amend it.
“The apparent relegation of July 1st to a commemorative one makes no sense to me. 1st July is not the celebration of the first Republic. 1st July is a reflection of the day we attained Republican status as a nation State . . . When the Queen ceased being the Head of State, that is, indeed it’s when we had full political sovereignty," he said.
Kweku Baako further slammed the government regarding the Founder's Day which is to be observed as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day saying Kwame Nkrumah is already a global icon and doesn't need Founder's Day to be relevant, hence the government relegating the Founder's Day won't take anything from his legacy.
Mr. Baako questioned the logic behind the move by government to touch the Founder's Day because to him, Ghana's First President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah will remain the founder of Ghana despite any attempt to fiddle with the facts.
“Kwame Nkrumah does not need a Founder’s Day to be recognized. He is a global icon . . . He goes beyond Ghana, even Ghanaian politics. Nkrumah goes beyond party politics. He goes beyond Ghana. He is a global icon. In my view, he was the founder of Ghana . . . Nkrumah does not need 21st September to be celebrated as a Founder’s Day. He doesn’t need it. History has already vindicated him and his dimension is global,” he said.

Why don't you ask yourselves why it was imperative to arrested all his king makers? He was brought in as a secretary after Ako Adjei renounced the job for personal reasons! The true founders are Paa Grant, R.S. Blay and J.B. Danquah! R.S. even bought him (Nkrumah) his first suit...(ask his daughter). I should know one of them (won't mention) was my biological grandfather!
All anti Nkrumah comments show haterdness and nepotism but not thinkers. As said, a Hero is not recognized by his own people! Atleast, think a little to hide your ignorance. Just to mention a few, Tema, Ghana Airways, Blackstar Line, Tema Motoway, Akosombo, AOU, ECOWAS, etc., demonstrate Nkrumah's achievements within 9 years of solid, quality, prudent, loving, tolerant, selfless, wisdomized, reliable, charismatic, visionary leadership. Look at how your deceitful, unwise, nepotistic, ungrateful, selfish, promise-and-fail, and arrogant Akofu Addo is dealing with Nkrumah's Ghana. A total hardship on Ghanaians. The problem is your ignorance and tribalistic mindset. ***barred word*** DANQUAH!! NKRUMAH NEVER DIES!!!!!
How can individual "found" a place? Where were the people then? Our ancestors have been around before Nkrumah was born We are just sick sycophants
Uncle Kweku Baako’s analysis has revealed clearly the reason why the UGCC, from which Nkrumah sprang to fame was alienated from Ghana’s final feet of independent achievement. Mr. also alluded to the fact that the UGCC started the Independence process before Nkrumah was brought down but the group split at a point trying to work for Independence with different methods which Nkrumah’s group won it at the end. Mr. Baako also admitted that Danquah brought the name Ghana, and that Danquah was not personally in Parliament when the UGCC MP’s were kicking against Nkrumah’s idea of accepting “Ghana”, as a new name for the then Independent Gold Coast. However, Mr. Baako failed to recognize the bitterness Nkrumah brought to the UGCC’s course for the Independence with which he had been entrusted with the duty of Secretary. The issue at stake is how as a nation we can heal the past and accord those who fought for our Independence the necessary recognition. So the question is; should we leave Danquah and co who were the original architects of our Independence on the basis of the fact Nkrumah disagreed with them at some point in time?
Ceasefire folks. Okay let us remove KwameNkrumah apart who is the greatest Ghanaian living or dead?.
He is the first Ghanian president who took the country to the IMF. For a bailout. Such a self-centered person. Many more to say,but I will rest my case for now...Kudos to you, De Vasco.
NKRUMAH WAS CO-FOUNDER OF GHANA NOT THE FOUNDER PERIOD. PEOPLE SHOULD GET THIS IN THIER SKUUL
any leader who dies with his legacies is not a good one. if Nkrumah was global icon and his party has collapsed since after he died then what kind of leader was he? it tells you he took undue advantage of the opportunity some people gave him and so couldn't build a certain that survive for years. Nkrumah can never be a founder of Ghana.
Kwame Nkrumah was only an opportunist who took advantage of the high level of illiteracy at the time to push himself above the original founders. If indeed he was genuine, not wicked and a good man, he party would have been alive by now. Where is the foundation he built? Any foundation built on deceit can not stand. He foundation was built on straw and not rock, hence his crushing together with his party. That is the end of the wicked. If there is anyone who is also trying to be smart to destroy those who have pushed them to greater heights, that person should think twice and remember the Nkrumah.
Anytime Nkrumah's name is mentioned some CPP fanatics make it appear that he was a Saint. How can Nkrumah be the sole founder? Do we relegate the major contributions of others? Massa,
